Neil Johnson is the head of a new inter-disciplinary research group in Complexity at University of Miami in Florida. Previously he was Professor of Physics and co-director of research collaboration into Complexity at Oxford University.

A fine introduction to what Complexity is all about.

If you are unfamiliar with Complexity Theory ("The Science of Sciences") then this is a great book to start with. Neil Johnson has done an impeccable job of keeping the intricacies of Complexity within a very manageable framework that any layman can understand. Take this quote for example: "Complexity can be summed up by the phrase "Two's company, three is a crowd." In other words, Complexity Science can be seen as the study of the phenomena which emerge from a collection of interacting objects - and a crowd is a perfect example of such an emergent phenomenon, since it is a phenomenon which emerges from a collection of interacting people." The real strength of this book lies in Johnson's unsophisticated and plain approach towards Complexity Science which he couples with many real world examples. But neither does Johnson leave anything out; Self-Similarity, Fractals, Power-Laws, Networks, etc. - it's all here.

My only complaint about this book comes on page 100. Here, Johnson explains how the "six degrees of separation" network was conceived by Stanly Milgram in 1967. I am sure that Johnson knows that this was debunked by later research, but Johnson fails to mention this in the book (one only has to look to Wikipedia, Complexity: A Guided Tour by Melanie Mitchell or The Numbers Game: The Commonsense Guide to Understanding Numbers in the News, in Politics, and inLife for confirmation. I do not fault Johnson here because given the 'basic' level at which this book was written, he probably didn't feel like complicating the issue - the point he was trying to make was satisfied - and he therefore surely didn't feeling like going into the whole mess by upending the urban legend. So, with that aside, I do recommend this book as a great introduction to Complexity and recommend Complexity: A Guided Tour by Melanie Mitchell for the interested reader as a great book to continue learning about Complexity Science.

It's ok, I guess

I came to this book as a physicist with a hobby-level interest in complexity theory. And to me this was a disappointment. Mathematical depth is non-existent. In its course, the book goes over several problems, approaching them from the point of view of complexity theory. This perspective is interesting and instructive, sure enough. However, these explanations tend to be too long and convoluted. A point that could be made effectively in a paragraph often takes several pages. Even for a non-scientist looking for an overview of a subject, I can't imagine this is a helpful treatment.

Basically, imagine someone's dad went to a lawn mower convention, and now insists on telling everyone all the cool lawn mower gadgets he saw. It's exactly like that, except it's complexity theory and not lawn mowers. And it goes on for over 200 pages.

Melanie Mitchell's "Complexity: A guided tour" is a far better book. Just get that one.

Great First Book in Complexity Science

Complexity theory can be a difficult topic to learn and there is a wide body of literature with varying descriptions of what complexity means. Johnson's book is a great starting point for many readers because it is conversational in tone, free of complicated equations, covers a wide range of topics and does not assume a prior knowledge of complexity theory.

Johnson begins with a patient and detailed introduction to complexity and then introduces the role of disorder to build the groundwork for defining chaos, taking care to explain that chaotic does not equate to randomness when defined in scientific terms. His description of the eight key components of complexity (p. 15) are particularly valuable insights for those new to the topic.

An important feature of this book is Johnson's ability to make certain core concepts of complexity science clear to his readers. Examples include topics such as "pockets of order" (p. 21), "strange attractors" (p. 46), and "anti-crowds" (p. 72). Yet, Johnson's extended example of disordered files and filing cabinets quickly grows tedious. Nevertheless, for those who can endure the details, the example provides an effective way to explain some rather obscure concepts in complexity theory (e.g. strange attractors, chaos).

Johnson also articulates a very clear explanation for the formation and function of fractals as emergent outcomes in certain complex systems. This unique approach to explaining fractals is especially valuable for non-mathematicians who are curious about their relationship to system outcomes. Yet, because many people are confused by the role of fractals in complex systems it would have been helpful for the author to contrast the types of systems where fractals are, and are not expected to form. There appears to be considerable confusion about this in the business community and the popular press, especially related to organizations as complex systems.

Another topic which often seems confusing to those learning complexity is the role of feedback, especially in the organizational context where information is the medium of exchange that alters the system. Johnson depicts a framework (p. 26) of how feedback can influence complexity and provides order to a system, but fails to emphasize how feedback operates differently in a complex system, compared with a cybernetic system. He does indicate that feedback incorporates learning and memory into human dynamics but seems to suggest that feedback is the key ingredient that moves systems from order to disorder and back (p. 110). Johnson could be much clearer that complex systems don't experience feedback as a regulatory mechanism to maintain equilibrium as seen in more traditional dynamical systems. And that disorder or emergent outcomes in complex systems are also related to other mechanisms. This is conceptually important, because complex systems are generally "far from equilibrium", a characteristic that has deep implications for expected system behavior.

Overall, these are minor issues that don't mitigate the value of this excellent book, which represents an accessible and thorough treatment of complexity science at the introductory level. Lastly, don't overlook the appendix for an extensive annotated list of references and resources about complexity topics.

It has helped me to understand my wife, my children, and most of all, myself in a profound new way. I see why we act the way we act which has improved our communications and increased the peace in our home. It has also improved my professional relationships and leadership skills. I bought this book when it first came out. I actually took a class for teachers that opened up a whole new world of understanding others. Not only will you find out about yourself, but you will find out what makes your partner and your children act the way they do. In addition, you will discover what motivates them. Your approach to dealing with others will change in ways that you can't imagine! Each color has it's unique set of personality traits. I have used this knowledge for years in setting up my classroom. I give the kids my own version of the test and seat them according to personality. You definitely don't want two reds sitting together! Over the years I have seen my children marry colors that were compatible and colors that were not. The added dimension of understanding others will make you a much better person! Others will feel like you are the only one who "gets them"! Buy this book if you are hesitant!

Dr. Laura Brearley coordinates the Deep Listening Project, an international creative exchange between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, musicians, and researchers. The Project grew out of the Koori Cohort of Researchers that she established at RMIT University and Monash University. Laura is a creative research specialist and an Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University in Melbourne.

About the Author

Professor Ahmad Fauzi Ismail is the Founding Director of Advanced Membrane Technology Research Center (AMTEC) and also the Dean of Research for Materials and Manufacturing Research Alliance of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Professor Fauzi obtained a PhD. in Chemical Engineering in 1997 from University of Strathclyde and MSc. and BSc. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1992 and 1989 respectively. He is the author and co-author of over 350 refereed journals. He has authored 3 books, 25 book chapters and 3 edited books, 3 Patents granted 17 Patents pending. He has won more than 120 awards. Professor Fauzi’s research focuses on development of polymeric, inorganic and novel mixed matrix membranes for water desalination, waste water treatment, gas separation processes, membrane for palm oil refining, photocatalytic membrane for removal of emerging contaminants and polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell applications. Professor Fauzi has involved extensively in R&D&C for multinational companies related to membrane-based processes for industrial application.�

Professor Takeshi Matsuura studied at the University of Tokyo and the Institute of Chemical Technology of the Technical University of Berlin. He was appointed to Professor Emeritus of the University of Ottawa upon his retirement in 2002 after serving as professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering (currently Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering) and the director of the Industrial Membrane Research Institute (IMRI). He also served at University Technology Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Malaysia (currently at the Advanced Membrane Technology Research Centre (AMTEC) of UTM), as a distinguished visiting professor, in years 2007, 2009-2014. He delivered many lectures at overseas research institutions and international conferences. He has published about 450 papers in refereed journals, authored and co-authored 6 books and edited 8 books.

Kailash C. Khulbe is a graduate of Agra University, India where he obtained the BSc, MSc and PhD. Degree.� His doctoral thesis was on the kinetics of the oxidation of aldehydes, ketones and other related compounds by persulphate catalyzed by Ag+ ion.� He joined Ottawa University (Chemical Engineering Department) in late 1960’s and worked on different projects related with catalysts, bitumen, Oil, ESR, IR, X-ray analysis, Chromatography etc. �He joined the Dr. T. Matsuura group (Industrial Membrane Research Institute (IMRI)) in the middle of�� 1990’s and started work on synthetic membranes. His main interests are AFM, Synthetic Membranes (Polymeric/Inorganic), Water treatment etc. He published more than 350 articles, one book (AFM for synthetic membranes) and many chapters for different books.

The book details Hitler’s increasing mental and physical disintegration during the final days of WWII, when he was secreted underneath the battle-ravaged streets of Berlin with a last core of supporters. It ends with his suicide as Russian troops close in. Fest is the author of several previous books about Hitler and Nazism (The Face of the Third Reich; Speer; Hitler; etc.). His command of diaries, letters and other primary sources allows him to share such illuminating details as the following: "Hitler’s...facial features had become puffy, bloated. With Ian Kershaw, Fest is the most authoritative and reputable of the numerous biographers of the Nazi dictator, and he here continues the reconstruction, initiated by British historian Hugh Trevor-Roper's The Last Days of Hitler (1946), of Hitler's suicide. Fest's may not be the last word, either, as he notes that historians have not yet accessed some Soviet interrogation records of Hitler's retinue. With such caveats, Fest narrates the sequence of the final Soviet offensive against Berlin, as reported to the bomb shelter where Hitler was holed up. Fest pauses in four chapters for interpretive reflection on the spectacle of apocalyptic destruction that was Berlin in April 1945. It had a demented theatricality, Fest argues, in which Hitler took some jubilation and even fulfillment. As his final act in history, willing the city's destruction was a characteristic if intensified outer spectacle of Hitler's inner pathologies. Fest connects his last ravings with the exaltation of hatred, conquest, and death of his preceding course. Well-rendered and judged, Fest's treatment will provoke thought about Nazidom's finale. Not a Companion Volume to "Downfall"

If you've just see the stunning, timeless and (frighteningly) timely film Downfall, and are looking for a companion volume or perhaps some follow- up reading to learn more about the bewildering menagerie of characters the film introduces, this is NOT it. Though an excellent book in its own right, Inside Hitler's Bunker actually provides only the briefest of glimpses inside the bunker, and even less information about the backgrounds and fates of the people in and around it during the final days of the Third Reich. Instead this short book focuses on exactly what it's original German title says it does: Hitler and the end of the Third Reich. Fest, one of the worlds leading experts on Hitler, here summarizes some of the major themes of Hitler's philosophy (if it can be called that) as it reaches its end, against the back drop of the collapse of his r�gime. The bunker and its inhabitants are visited only when necessary to aid his tour through Hitler's mind.

About the Author
Jon B. Hagen was awarded his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1972, where he went on to gain 30 years' experience as an electronic design engineer, as well as establishing and teaching a Cornell electrical engineering course on RF electronics. Now retired, he has held positions as Principal Engineer at Raytheon, Electronics Department Head at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, and Director of the NAIC Support Laboratory at Cornell.

Very Intuitive

I am finding this book to be highly readable and enjoyable. It is a book that emphasizes on intuitive concepts. Just the chapter on oscillators alone is worth the price of the book. In my opinion intuitive understanding ranks way higher than dozens and dozens of equations and thus I am giving this book 5 stars.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION

If you're interested in this book, AVOID THE KINDLE EDITION and spring for a paper copy. The equations are rendered in a virtually illegible font. In more than 5 instances in the first chapter alone, plus signs (i.e., addition) are randomly substituted with forward slashes (i.e., division). If I weren't familiar with the formulae in question, I would've been hopelessly confused. Reading this book in electronic format is therefore next to useless. It's disappointing that no one at Cambridge University Press or Amazon thought to proofread the electronic format for accuracy and readability prior to putting it up for sale.

Vivid descriptions of the life of a soldier and an explanation of the powerful influence the poem had on society at the time are also included. Black-and-white sketches, photographs of the subject, and memorabilia (e.g., war posters and medals) add to the visual appeal created by Wilson's artwork. The format is somewhat confusing, combining the expository text with full- and double-page paintings captioned with lines of the poem. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful book that can be used in a number of ways because of the variety of information it contains.

The poem appears in full on the first page, followed by a combination of poetry, painting, and background material on the era. The 16 lines John McCrae wrote following a friend's death in the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915 survived and flourished in the insanity of WW I, and in this work, continue to evince the same sturdy beauty as do the scarlet poppies blowing in Flanders fields. The poem, ``In Flanders Fields,'' has acquired so much emotional weight it could collapse any book focusing on it. Granfield (Cowboy, 1994, etc.) doesn't let that happen. Her strong, sensitive treatment, with Wilson's matching illustrations, catch the torch thrown ``from failing hands'' and wield it to illuminate the story of not only the poet-doctor, but also the war itself. Granfield deftly interweaves the lines of the poem with informative short essays on life in the trenches, accounts of McCrae's experiences in his field hospital, the burgeoning popularity of poppies as symbols of remembrance, and more. Wilson's paintings beautifully evoke place, time, and incident. The incorporation of black-and-white archival materials, such as postcards, posters, and photographs, adds yet another layer of interest, while maps on the endpapers provide further information. The book revivifies the poem, placing it so well on its feet in its world that it's difficult to think of the classroom in which the book would not be of use. excellent value

Yes, this poem is contained in various anthologies. However, its import and its gravity seem to be better represented in this noble offering. At one cent shy of a dollar, it is reasonably priced and can now stand alone and proud on your Kindle shelf. Millions died horribly in this increasingly forgotten war...give one final salute to their once-vital being. Buy this poem, read this poem,....and never forget.

Very sad and powerful. We visited the battlefields, and so moving could not even talk while there.
And, yes, red poppies were growing everywhere.

Beautiful book about a beautiful and meaningful poem.

I have used this book as part of my Veteran's Day lesson in my high school classes for several years. The beautiful illustrations and story add a lot to an already beautiful and meaningful poem. This copy was a gift for a friend, an elementary school teacher, who also loves it.
