A good, well-written read

Amy wakes up in a strange room. She’s locked in with a freezer full of food and a wardrobe of clothes which look like her own but are new. She’s been abducted by her stalker. We know this from the start. She’s in mourning for the love of her life and bumped into a man at a gig where she sang with her friend’s band – The Butterfly Effect. He’s creepy, manipulative and she regrets giving him any positive signals. There are two people looking out for her. One is Olga, her friend from the band; the other is her late boyfriend’s best mate, a man Olga can’t stand. Amy is conflicted.

This is an unusual ‘stalker story’ in that the abduction has already happened by the time we enter the narrative. We watch as Amy works out, with horror, what has gone on in her life and how difficult it is making choices of friends. I enjoyed the tension set up in the story and Amy’s initial denials of what she eventually finds to be the truth. A very good, well-written read.

The Butterfly Effect

This is a very tense psychological thriller. Amy wakes up in a strange locked room after being kidnapped. She recounts what led to her being there from her happy life to being stalked and losing her family and friends.

I read this in just two sittings, I just didn't want to put it down as I followed Any into her spiral of despair and how she planned to get out of it. The story is told in Amy's first person, so we are introduced to her past life as she recalls it. To me this made the story very insular and claustrophobic and kept me wanting to know more.

I'd say this is a good read, but it made me feel creeped out. Just what a good psychological thriller should do.

Wolpert, professor emeritus of biology at University College London (Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast), conceives bodies as complex societies of cells, with each individual cell and cell type fulfilling a very specific role. As Wolpert explains, cells are incredibly complicated, representing evolution in action. Indeed, Wolpert asserts, However clever one thinks cells are, they almost always turn out to exceed one's expectations. He provides basic biological information about cell structure, genetics and reproduction, and then discusses the roles cells play in disease, aging, death, reproduction, memory, emotion and much more. In focusing on the process of human development, he marvels at how a single cell, a fertilized egg, can grow into a complex organism. Along the way, Wolpert lightly touches on some hot-button topics like the ethics of stem cell research; when a developing fetus might be considered human; and the ethics of cloning. His range is so great that he has little time to delve beneath the surface of any of the subjects he raises, making this a cursory introduction for the novice in basic cell biology and its implications. Wonderful Survey of cells - without a single diagram

If you want to catch up on basic biology of the cell Lewis Wolpert had written the primer. In plain and precise english he takes through a tour of all that's known about the cells that make us who we are. If I was just rating the text, it deserves 5-stars.

Unbelievably this masterful text is dumped on the reader without a single diagram, drawing or illustration. You read this right. Imagine taking your college biology course by just reading 200+ pages of text. I spent hours reading a few pages and then getting on the web to find pictures or videos to help explain what I was reading. I finally gave up when I realized I should just go out and buy a book that had invested the time in illustrating these difficult concepts.

I don't know what the publisher was thinking and why the author would agree to this. If the purpose of the book was to provide the lay-reader with insight into the workings of the cell in the body, this is an unfinished book.

Kudo's to the writer for the text but not worth buying until the book is completed. Shame on the publisher for trying to do this on the cheap.

Fascinating primer on the state of the art in cell biology

Wolpert gives an expert's overview of everything we know as humans about our own cells. The book is appropriate for anyone with some vague familiarity with biology looking to get up to speed. However, there are two major flaws with this text. First, there are no pictures, diagrams, or even references to accompany the text. This makes understanding the process of cell division, for example, next to impossible. Second, there are glaring grammatical and basic style errors. I encountered many run-on sentences and sudden changes of topic in the middle of paragraphs. I would have expected better writing from such an acclaimed researcher and presumably reasonable editor! Regardless, I enjoyed reading it and recommend it as a primer for more in depth reading on biology elsewhere.

This book does NOT need illustrations...

This book does NOT need illustrations. It is written almost as a stream of consciousness in which having to refer to an illustration would have been a distraction.
Concepts are absorbed and details retained without conscious effort. It is written like a narrative in which the before and after flow together seamlessly.
Initially, while reading it I thought it needed a editor but then I realized that would only have interrupted the flow and would not have contributed anything - it would have become as sterile as a textbook.
It is like a romance, in which the author scatters details of the characters which make them real.
The author's excitement and wonder shine through and are infectious.

It is worth noting that Kerr and his family have returned to Scotland since the publication of this book; not all dreams turn out as expected. The dream of Scotsman Kerr and his wife had been to own a farm on their vacation island, Majorca. Through the wild serendipity that sometimes visits those who are lost, they happened upon the orange farm of their dreams, charming, rustic, and for sale. It is December when they move in, and though the weather is nothing like what they would experience in Scotland, it is snowing on their newly acquired orange trees! Then the farm itself turns out to be something of a lemon, with failing mechanics, inadequate drains, and the peculiar responsibility of feeding the previous owner's dogs and cats. Fortunately, the majority of their neighbors are helpful and good-hearted, so by spring, the local attitude of "tranquilo" is no longer a foreign concept to the new landowners. Readers will relish Kerr's adept account of the agricultural and social customs of the island and generous insights into one couple's bold transplanting of their lives. Danise Hoover

Snowball Oranges

I bought this book at LA Airport just before flying to the UK, and I have to say that reading it made short of the long journey.� I read it in one go, and my outbursts of snickering and laughing must have had my fellow travellers wondering if I was a few oranges short of the pound.

This book is unique in the travel genre in that the writer has a wonderful ability to tell his story as though it were a novel instead of just a travelogue.� His sharply-observed�portrayal of rural Majorcan characters and his vivid descriptions of the island's scenery and cuisine are so realistic that you can almost feel the sunshine, taste the food and smell the orange blossom.

I enjoyed the book so much that I bought the sequel, 'Manana, Manana', as soon as I arrived in the UK, and it lived up to my expectations and more.� Next day I booked my first vacation to Majorca, and I can't wait to visit the places so graphically depicted in these books.� You can bet I'll be first in line to buy the third in the series whenever it's published.� Estupendo, Don Pedro!

I bought this book two days ago and have to say that I have strugglled to put it down since. For anyone with an interest in travel and the charismatic characters one meets this is an essential read. It is written in almost a novel format and whilst this does much to enrich the individual chapters I did feel that this style did mean that some of the warmth of the principal characters was lost.In this sense it fell short of other books in the genre, notably Chris Stewart's Driving over lemons. However, Kerr's detailed descriptions of his neigbours were a pleasue to read. At times it is laugh out loud funny and just looking at the next paragraph would prompt another outburst. A good read. Now where is my passport?

Good but not Great

I love reading about people and their lives in other parts of the world. Throw in that I have a friend with a place in Majorca and this became a must read.
This is very much in the same vein as "A year in Proviance", "On Tuscan Time" or the best of the bunch "The Caliph's House" (about renovating a house in Casablanca). While it has some insights and some funny bits (like his neighbor cleaning his chimney with a live chicken), its very much a me-too book. Also the author has chosen to write 4 books about his time in Majorca which makes the whole thing a bit of a stretch.
So its O.K., but the other books noted were much better.

About the Author

Greg Ward Larson is a member of the technical staff at Silicon Graphics Inc. and most recently was a staff scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he developed Radiance.

Rob Shakespeare is Associate Professor of Theatre and Drama and director of the Theatre Computer Visualization Center at Indiana University, as well as a lighting designer specializing in dramatic lighting.

Many LD+A readers know Radiance as a lighting design and analysis program that was developed by Greg Ward (Larson) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Those who have investigated Radiance know that it is freely available, but usable only if you have a UNIX workstation and the patience to master more than 50 software tools. In ten years, it has attracted a coterie of fewer than 400 dedicated users.
Rendering with Radiance will undoubtedly change this. Originally conceived as a UNIX-style technical manual, the book is much more. It offers several tutorials, numerous application examples, and detailed discussions of the program's underlying mathematical algorithms. The accompanying CD-ROM includes example images, Radiance models and material libraries, reference manuals, and fully commented C source code for Radiance 3.1.
Despite first impressions, this book is not about computer graphics. The Radiance Lighting Simulation and Rendering System was created for advanced lighting designers and academic researchers, and more than half of the book is devoted to applying Radiance to real-world lighting problems. Ward Larson, Shakespeare and three contributing experts discuss luminaire modeling and lighting analysis, daylight simulation, animation, roadway lighting, theatre lighting, and exterior lighting. Even if you have committed yourself to using architectural visualization programs such as Lightscape and RadioRay, you will find an abundance of useful information in this book.
Radiance is the only software program that faithfully models the physical behavior of light, especially specular and semispecular reflections. It has a steep learning curve, but the quality of the architectural renderings it produces is unequalled by any commercial product. With Rendering with Radiance, we now have a user's manual that fully complements the capabilities of its namesake.
This truly is a remarkable book. Unlike most computer graphics texts, it presents lengthy discussions of IES photometric data files, luminance meters and spectrophotometers, the CIE overcast sky model, roadway light metrics, veiling luminance, spectral transmission data, and much more. The major algorithms used by Radiance are fully documented, including discussions of their limitations. There is more information in this book on lighting software use and design than can be found in all other books combined.
The major disadvantage of Radiance is that it was developed for UNIX workstations. In the past, this restricted the use of the program (really a set of UNIX tools) mostly to academic researchers. However, the freely-available and popular UNIX clone Linux now allows Radiance to be run with few difficulties on Windows and Macintosh computers.

As a contributor to the text, I am a bit biased, but I do think you will find the book's numerous chapters very helpful for folks of a wide range of skill levels. It is a great resource guide, reference book and tutorial. It includes the Radiance executables for a few Unix platforms on the CD-ROM! These alone will save you an hour or two. The book is well worth the money, but don't take my word for it.
