The brother of General William Howe, the British commander, had died in Colonel Israel Putnam’s arms near Fort Ticonderoga. Colonel William Prescott had fought beside General William Howe at the siege of Louisburg and had been offered a commission in the Royal Army for his valor. Now, only fifteen years after their joint victories as comrades in arms, Prescott and Putnam steadied their raw American troops with harsh advice to withhold their fire on the advancing British ranks until "you can see their buttons," or "the whites of their eyes."

After the British forces came ashore, the battle opened with a deftly launched flanking movement by the British right. John Stark arrived with his New Hampshire men in time to predict the point at which Howe would first attack and to seal that gap with British dead - "I never saw sheep lie as thick in the fold." Howe did not pause to maneuver but assaulted the American fortifications along the whole front. The young farmers did not give way, and the British reeled back. "There was a moment," Howe, a veteran and victor of many battles against the French in Europe and North America, recalled later, "that I never felt before." But the British doggedly advanced again up the murderous hill in the ninety-degree heat.

The forces that impelled these men to that terrible moment of battle and the courage of both sides are the powerful substance of Bunker Hill.

You get what you pay for

A grade school primer. It has mistakes in it. Such as on the first page the author calls a British warship (I don't have the book open in front of me) a battleship when it was a post ship (a merchant ship purchased by the Royal Navy to serve as a frigate (showing the flag). I would suggest Decisive Day by Richard M. Ketchum.

The U.S. annexation of California in 1848 and the simultaneous discovery of gold sparked rapid and diverse waves of immigration westward, displacing the already established pastoral Mexican society. Almaguer shows how the confrontation between white immigrants and the Mexican ranchero and working class populations was also a contestation over racial status in which racialization influenced and was in turn influenced by class position in the changing economic order. Partly because of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which granted U.S. citizenship and other rights, parts of the Mexican population were integrated into the emerging Anglo society more easily than other racialized groups. A case study of Ventura County highlights declining political and economic fortunes of the Mexican elite while showing how Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and Indian populations were permanently relegated to the bottom of the class structure as unskilled manual workers.

The fate of the Native American population provides perhaps the most extreme example of white supremacy during the period. Popular conceptions of Native Americans as "uncivilized and "heathen," justified the killing of more than 8,000 men, women, and children between 1848 and 1870. Many survivors were incorporated at the periphery of Anglo society, often as indentured laborers and virtual slaves.

Underpinning the institutional structuring of white supremacy were notions such as "manifest destiny," the inherent good of the capitalist wage-system, and the superiority of Christianity and Euro-American culture, all of which helped to marginalize non white groups in California and justify Anglo-American class dominance. As other racialized groups assumed new roles, Almaguer assesses the complex interplay between economic forces and racial attitudes that simultaneously structured and allocated "group position" in the new social hierarchy.

California remains a contested racial frontier, as political struggles over the rights and opportunities of different groups continue to reverberate along racial lines. Racial Fault Lines is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of ethnicity and class in America, and the social construction of "race" in the Far West.

Important work in California history.

I realized that racism influenced the history of our state, but Almaguer does a brilliant job at revealing the degree to which this sad statement is true. This is an importnat book for anyone who lives in California, especially for those involved in governemnt, business, or public education. Racism has had a real effect on our state and people of color, and it contineus to today. The knowledge contained in this book can help us move away from our mistakes and better understand how public action and government policies can change things, for better or worse.

almost faultless

Almaguer has given us a useful history of racial attitudes and white supremacy in nineteenth century Cali. Avoiding a "binary"-- or black/white-- understanding of racial relations, Racial Fault Lines traces the unique racial sagas of Mexicans, Chinese, and Indian peoples in their encounters with "white" Californians. Almaguer could do more to investigate interactions among such groups ACROSS the categories of "racial otherness": Mexican, Chinese, and Indian. SOme readers will also question his chronology and wonder to what extent the 'origins of white supremacy' in California might have begun much earlier than the mid-nineteenth century, where his book focuses.

A useful way to look at Canadian literature

Atwood's Survival was a seminal book for me back in the 1970's. Her theory that there are national themes in literature is very useful for studying cultures generally. The rap on the book is that she has not done a thorough, scholarly job of research and tends to favour references to books written by her friends or published by her publisher. I think this is unfair. She is a working writer, not an academic, and she herself notes the book's scholarly limitations. The real fun is in taking the book's theses and running with them yourself.
Atwood sees the essential Canadian literary theme as the survival in the title: the survival of winter, imposed on us as Canadians by our geography and climate.
A very thought-provoking book.

a classic text in applied mathematics

This is one of the finest textbooks on applied mathematics. It is appropriate for a wide range of levels and disciplines. A moderately paced graduate class can finish most of the chapters in a full year. The first two chapters cover material that is difficult to find elsewhere and nowhere is it better handled. The real boon to this book is the constant integration of physical reasoning with solid mathematical theory. To be sure, many of the more complicated ideas are only mentioned, but the later chapters pick these up and go much further. It covers basic heat and wave applications, but also Brownian motion and gas dynamics. A solid calculus background is needed, which includes vector calculus and convergence issues. Eigenvalues and some functional analysis are needed. Many books on elementary partial differential equations spend all their time on the big three: heat, wave and Laplace. This is too low a level for any graduate class and doesn't create the excitement other applications provide. On the other hand, this book is accessible to many people. Often, graduate texts are thoroughly awash with Sobolev spaces and weak convergence and the physical problem, i.e., the actual model, is all but ignored. This classic text is the bridge between elementary and advanced applied mathematics. In some respects, it is self-contained. Guenther and Lee have written an indispensable book.

Could God right the wrong and allow him to have a new start on Virginia Wildwood Plantation after such a disastrous life in Dodge City? It's a mid-19th century romance where a man goes east, not west, looking for a new lease on life.

He runs into a girl with a difficulty of her own. Fortunately both continue to strive for a relationship with God through troubled times. This book is a reissue with much improved larger format and contemporary cover from award winning author Loree Lough. Now also available for Kindle. Being good Christian Historical Fiction it is never past it's `sell by' date.

Lone Wolf is the first bookof Loree Loughs i have read and i was not disapointed, Kent a man put in prison for 10 years for a crime he didnt do, comes up on the ranch and home of Abby, hired as formon he sets in to do his job and his job only. but God has other plans he has answered Abbys prayers for love and her dieing mothers prayers for some one to take care of her.With a cripple leg Abby feels unworthy, with the past hanging over him Kent feels hescant marry any one, with all this God brings them together as the both learn to trust in him, i will be starting a second book soon and i cant wait, i love Lone Wolf and give it a 5 star.

About the Author

John D. Anderson, Jr., was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on October 1, 1937. He attended the University of Florida, graduating in 1959 with high honors and a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering Degree. From 1959 to 1962, he was a Lieutenant and Task Scientist at the Aerospace Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. From 1962 to 1966, he attended the Ohio State University under the National Science Foundation and NASA Fellowships, graduating with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory as Chief of the Hypersonics Group. In 1973, he became Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, and since 1980 has been Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. In 1982, he was designated a Distinguished Scholar/Teacher by the University. During 1986–1987, while on sabbatical from the University, Dr. Anderson occupied the Charles Lindbergh Chair at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. He continued with the Air and Space Museum one day each week as their Special Assistant for Aerodynamics, doing research and writing on the History of Aerodynamics. In addition to his position as Professor of Aerospace Engineering, in 1993, he was made a full faculty member of the Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science and in 1996 an affiliate member of the History Department at the University of Maryland. In 1996, he became the Glenn L. Martin Distinguished Professor for Education in Aerospace Engineering. In 1999, he retired from the University of Maryland and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Curator for Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution.

A better historical than analytical textbook.

Any student who has read through this textbook and tried to understand the derivations and derive the equations presented will realize that Anderson's forte is history more than engineering. The text is well written and interesting to read since Anderson gives a good historical background to each concept but Anderson's explanations are sometimes questionable and there are many conceptual and formula errors. The book does have good figures and presents a lot of good data but for students trying to learn aircraft performance for the first time, there are better textbooks out there. I am currently a PhD student in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech studying for the qualifying exam. I was studying from this textbook but found that it was difficult to master the concepts to my professor's expectations based on what Anderson has presented. I recently aquired "Mechanics of Flight" by Warren Phillips which is much better at presenting the same material and is much more exhaustively researched from an analytical point of view. It is also much cheaper with twice the content so I would recommend it over Anderson's "Aircraft Performance and Design."

A great introduction to aircraft design

This is an excellent book and can be used as a continuation of Introduction to Flight by the same author. This book focuses on airplane design and performance, but also gives a very clear introduction to propulsion and aerodynamics of airplanes. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in airplane design, as well as Daniel Raymer's book Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach. Both books I found to be extremely interesting and written in clear, easy to understand language.
This book was used in an upper level Aircraft Performance and Dynamics class that I recently took. I also found this book very helpful in my Aircraft Design class and my Aircraft Propulsion class. In short, a student of aeronautical engineering couldn't ask for a more well rounded book on aircraft design--covering all the aforementioned topics.
If only all engineering textbooks were so well written!

Anderson's books are not very good as a textbook, but would be better as a reviewer. There's more formulas than you can shake a stick at (Chapter 3 has over 150 formulas). There's not too much explaining at all, and you're struggling to find what various symbols mean. It's not a useful tool at all.
