A Great Non-Self-Help Book!

I just finished listening to Lord Change Me by James Macdonald. This was my first exposure to Macdonald's work and it really impressed me. I liked it mostly because of how practical it is. As a pastor, Macdonald's writing has been tested in the crucible of real-life, so he really understands where the popular reader is at.

The book is broken into three main sections:

1. The Preparation for Change - this section walks through understanding "faulty methods for change"; sets up a process for admitting to God that you are willing to change; and guidance for choosing things you're willing to change.

2. The Process for Change - this section frames a biblical theology for supporting the process of changing.

3. The Power for Change - this section outlines three main power sources: the power of the Holy Spirit, the power of faith, and the power of Christian friends who can keep you accountable and growing in your faith.

The book flows well through this outline, and I really liked the skill Macdonald has for making material engaging. He employs interesting stories, unique formatting, and memorable phraseology. But the best thing about the book is Macdonald's confidence. He really believes he has been honest with scripture and personal experience in order to develop a step-by-step process that really works. He introduces the book this way:

"This is not a book to help you 'talk a better game,' nor is it designed to fill your head with information. This book is about a different you. After much prayer and reflection, I believe I can promise you with 100 percent assurance that if you apply to your heart and life the biblical principles in this book, you will be changed!"

Overall, this first taste of Macdonald's writing has me really excited. I saved multiple quotes for Bible classes and sermon illustrations; I also plan to read more of his work.

About the Author
Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1937) was born in Granada, Spain. A poet and playwright (Blood Wedding, The House of Bernarda Alba), he was killed by the Falangists in Spain during the Spanish Civil War.

Blood Wedding is a tragedy written by Federico Garcia Lorca in 1932, and performed in Madrid in 1933. It is one of seven of his works profiled in "The New Essential Guide to Spanish Reading" published by America Reads Spanish, a campaign aimed to increase the use and reading of the Spanish language through the thousands of libraries, schools and book stores in the US. As reviewed in the guide,and "Based on a true story, Blood Wedding is one of the most powerful, inventive and recognized plays written in modern Spanish literature."

Bodas de sangre

Bodas de sangre, una de las tragedias m�s famosas de Federico Garc�a Lorca, es una obra que funciona en muchos niveles. Aunque la trama en s� no sea muy original, la manera en que se cuenta s� es innovadora: el uso de los colores, el lenguaje popular andaluz y la poes�a crean un ambiente convincente. Es un mundo que es bello y siniestro al mismo tiempo- hay, dentro de canciones y poes�as superficialmente bellas, ag�eros violentos, y la inevitabilidad de la violencia permea la obra entera. Garc�a Lorca nos muestra, a trav�s de la obra, una Andaluc�a llena de mito, fatalismo y conflicto at�vico. De hecho, se puede decir que la tierra misma es el protagonista de la obra- hay referencias constantes a las flores, las hierbas (que, en la obra dram�tica y po�tica de Garc�a Lorca, representan la muerte) y a la tierra en s�, que se presenta como un leviat�n que controla el destino de los seres humanos. En este sentido, la obra tiene un elemento m�tico que es similar a las tragedias griegas. Sin embargo, en Bodas de sangre este elemento m�tico no se encuentra en los dioses, sino en la tierra dura, algo que me recuerda la poes�a de Antonio Machado (el poema "La tierra de Alvargonz�lez", por ejemplo).
No es la mejor tragedia de Garc�a Lorca (La casa de Bernarda Alba la es), pero es una buena introducci�n a su mundo dram�tico.
Adem�s, quisiera mencionar que la edici�n de C�tedra es la mejor que he visto: contiene una buena introducci�n sobre los problemas de la tragedia en el mundo moderno, y c�mo Garc�a Lorca supera estos obst�culos. Adem�s, contiene notas al pie de las p�ginas que explican ciertos s�mbolos y regionalismos.

A perfect ending to a great 2 book series!

Oh my aching heart. I had some major feels for Seth in this one. Not only has he endured years of abuse at the hands of his father, but now he is gone in search of his mother. Leaving only a note to Harper to 'move on'. And that is just what she does. After months of heartbreak, Harper realizes it is time to move on. Seth obviously doesn't feel the same about her as she does him since he has never tried to contact her. But when he comes back into her life once again, her feelings are ripping at her very core. Her life is now flipped upside down. Will Harper be able to look past the hurt and abandonment? Will Seth be able to face his house that is so full of secrets and pain?

Even though the story is still told in Harper’s POV, my feelings for Seth were tenfold. I was itching to be inside his head. What I wouldn't give to know and feel what he felt. I know his life is absolute hell right now, but at least we knew he loved Harper. Yes, he has a lot to work through, but I was holding out hope that together they would be able to get past everything.

This really was such an emotional read. I had tears of sadness, tears of happiness, and even red hot anger. I thought Harper was more mature with some people in this read than I would have been. I was ready to rip his head off when his secrets were revealed. How dare him!! But I was also proud of her in some ways.

I loved when reading this story, how you are only a little ways in and you think, 'well Seth is back, they love each other, all is right with the world.' But not so. There is still lots of secrets and lots of heartache needing to happen. There is still a whole heck of a lot of book left to read. It can't be over yet. In fact, it is just getting to good stuff.

Loved the romance, loved the suspense, loved the characters. I am definitely one smitten kitten when it comes to this author. She knows how to write a story that pulls you in from the start and leaves you with a smile on your face in the end. And she knows what readers what when it comes to romance. It is sweet and it is beautiful. I will always be excited to read more from Hope and anything else she publishes. SECRETS AND LIES is a must read if you are eager to see how it all ends for Seth and Harper.

This series had an original story line. Secrets and Lies was a great follow-up to Truths and Dares. Everything wrapped up nicely. It had a perfect happy ending.
