Metabolic Pathways of Agrochemicals, Part 2: Insecticides and Fungicides (Metabolic Pathways (Royal Society of Chemistry)) (Pt.2)From Ro

This important publication provides a comprehensive summary of data and information on the metabolism and chemical degradation of agrochemicals in soils, plants and animals. Part 1, Herbicides and Plant Growth Regulators, and Part 2, Insecticides and Fungicides, together provide a major bibliography, as each entry is fully referenced. Contents include metabolic products, pathways and mechanisms, together with useful details on physico-chemical properties and mode of action. Both parts are organised by class of chemical for easy reference. There are separate entries for each pesticide, covering most commercially available chemicals in use today. In addition, an overview of the metabolism of each major class provides the reader with an informed summary of key similarities and significant differences between individual chemicals. Information is based primarily on literature from the past 40 years of research, together with some important, previously unpublished work provided by the agrochemical companies. Presented in a systematic, easy-to-read style, with extensive indexing to facilitate the rapid location of required information and the comparison of related compounds, Metabolic Pathways of Agrochemicals is an invaluable reference for chemists, biochemists and biologists working in the discovery, development and registration of agrochemicals, as well as scientists in related areas such as design and mode of action of pharmaceuticals.

Paper Airplanes, by Dawn O'Porter

Rene and Flo are the most unlikely of friends. Introspective and studious Flo and outspoken, wild, and sexually curious Rene have barely spoken in their years of going to school together in Guernsey, a small British island off the coast of France. And yet, when tragedy strikes, it is only wild child Rene, who lost her mother at a young age, who is able to comfort a grieving Flo. The girls form an intense bond that sees them through a host of deeply relatable, wince-inducing experiences—drunken snogging; a sance in which clueless friends offer to summon Rene’s mother; dating a guy for free fish and chips. But toxic mean girls and personal betrayals threaten to tear the girls’ delicate new friendship apart.
In this gripping debut, Dawn O’Porter shines an unflinchingly honest, humorous light on female friendship, lost innocence, and that moment when you are teetering on the threshold of adult life.

Praise for Paper Airplanes
"Dawn O'Porter was a teenager in her past life. Well, duh! How else could she have gotten this bitch-perfect, debut novel so right! Paper Aeroplanes is spot on! This teen friendship, is
brutal and beautiful, flawed and forgiving. The angst and anguish of adolescence are made safer by her talented hand. Wish she had written this when I was 15!"
--Jamie Lee Curtis

"Poignant and edgy, this exploration of lively female friendships rises high."

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—In this captivating and at times gritty debut, O'Porter presents a funny and poignant coming-of-age friendship of Flo and Rene. It's 1994, and the 15-year-olds are each facing their share of troubles on the small British island of Guernsey. Flo's parents have split up, and she's dealing with a critical mother at home and an incredibly domineering best friend at school. Rene is an extroverted troublemaker at school, but feels like a stranger in the home she shares with her bulimic younger sister and emotionally unavailable grandparents. The girls bond over the shared experience of familial tragedy and become close friends, exchanging notes on paper airplanes and finding in each other the support they crave. Readers will be drawn into the story, which moves quickly through alternating first-person narrations, which also serves to reveal potential cracks in the teens' bond. By the end, each girl comes to learn the importance of friendship and forgiveness and that the past, while not forgotten, doesn't have to define you. Though their behavior can be frustrating at times—Flo not standing up to mean girl Sally; Rene secretly having sex with Flo's older brother (in a scene that is entirely more heartbreaking than risqu)—readers will root for the pair and will also eagerly await the sequel.—Amanda Mastrull, Library Journal

One of the best YA contemporary novels I’ve read in a long time!
By Cait
Received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars. Quick, compelling & easy read. One of the best YA contemporary novels I’ve read in a long time. Loved the honesty and the humor with which Dawn O’Porter approached female teenage issues and friendship. Both Flo & Renee were extremely likeable and easy to relate to. “Paper Airplanes” is a great reminder of how difficult those years can be emotionally and physically. More importantly it reminds us how important a strong & loving friendship is and what that actually means. This is a MUST read.

and the friendship that develops between them after they both suffer great personal losses
By ItsJaneLindsey
Paper Airplanes is the debut novel from columnist/journalist Dawn O'Porter, set on the small British island of Guernsey in 1994. The story focuses on two girls, Rene and Flo, and the friendship that develops between them after they both suffer great personal losses.

I was really intrigued to read this novel. Usually contemporary is far from my favorite genre, but the idea of a uniquely British friendship story (set in the 90s at that!) drew me in. I appreciated that Rene and Flow went through struggles and setbacks that were portrayed realistically - one of this novel's few strengths.

It was...ok. O'Porter did a great job of representing some of those completely unique moments of being a teenage girl, and also the way families cope - or rather, don't cope - with loss. However, that's where Paper Airplanes' strengths end. The rest of the novel was underwhelming, to say the lest. The whole subplot with Rene and Flo's brother Julian felt cheap, because it exploited both the "having a crush on your friend's sibling" and "losing your virginity" tropes, and badly at that. Rene's "relationship" with Julian isn't exactly believable, and it gets to glossed over at the end that I had to wonder what was the point of it even happening. Sally's entire storyline (spoilers: she's awful and ends up preggers!) similarly felt pointless and verged well past clich. And since I'm putting my cards on the table here - the ending really took the cake. All this happens to and between the girls, and then miraculously everything is great! Flo's mother becomes present and starts taking care of her family, Rene's aunt shows up and magically solves all of her problems. It was just...too much. For a book that starts out as such a true depiction of being a teen girl, it ends on a cookie cutter note that felt completely lacking.

This book is a great example of what I have trust issues when it comes to contemporary YA.

O'Porter creates two authentic, honest, and gorgeously flawed young women
By ChinacatSun76
A US release of a book that's been well-received in the UK (first published in April 2013), Paper Airplanes is one of the most engrossing pieces of YA fiction I've read in recent memory. Dawn O'Porter creates two authentic, honest, and gorgeously flawed young women who live and breathe within the pages. Dealing with the (sometimes soul-crushing, sometimes soul-lifting) realities of female friendships, both teens and adults will recognize parts of themselves in Flo and Renee in this character-driven story.

Flo is a dedicated student, suffering from social invisibility and self-doubt at the hands of a shrew-like BFF who constantly puts her down and belittles her. Renee is a girl with a somewhat undeserved reputation around school, desperate for love that she can't get from her lukewarm boyfriend, her anorexic sister, or her financially struggling and out-of-touch grandparents who took became her guardians when their mother died. When they bond over the death of a parent (Flo's father dies early in the book) the two girls seem like an unlikely pair at first, but over the course of the novel Flo and Renee develop a friendship in secret that eventually becomes larger than either of them. As there often is, both minor and devastating secrets are kept, and the two girls must decide what "true" friendship is.

O'Porter expertly captures the highs and the lows of the teenage experience in a way that will appeal to teens and adults alike. And even though the novel is set in 1994, the experiences ring true to 2014. I actually found the 20 year throwback refreshing (no technology!), and she includes enough small details to establish the time period, but not make it the focus. The same can be said about the setting location, an all girls school in Guernsey; she includes just enough Brit-centric details (ex. crisps) to remind the reader of the setting, but not so many that it becomes cumbersome or an obstacle to understanding. The universality of women's friendships is at the center of the novel, and a somewhat foreign (to a US audience) time and place actually help reinforce that universality.

I have not completed the book yet but I have read about half. It is an excellent book for someone who aspires to be part of the music industry. It will give you the WHOLE picture, and a lot of legal information that many people probably don't know about. It also helped me realize some of my options as a musician. I highly recommend this book.

This book has a ton of great information!
By Andrew J. Boyd
Chris Knab has made his career in all areas of the music business, from record store owner to radio DJ, starting a record label to managing an independent radio station, and music business educator and consultant.

Using what he calls the Four Front strategy to cover Artist and Product Development, Promotion, Publicity and Performance issues, Chris Knab shows independent musicians how to navigate the paths to sucess in the music business.

Let me break these down for you a little bit. In the Artist Development section, he lays out the knowledge and skills that musicians and bands need to reach their goals of getting their music out to an audience, and guides you through the many potential minefields that can hinder you from achieving success. In the Product Development section, he and entertainment lawyer Bartley Day detail the specifics of getting a record released, including CD production and both retail and internet distribution, as well as the many legal issues to be considered. In the Promotion section, he gives detailed information needed to get radio airplay for your songs. In the Publicity section, he shows the ways to get the word about your music out to the print, broadcast and internet media. Finally in the Performance section, he focuses on ways to find and build an audience of customers for your music.

The book is packed with useful information, but is also easy to read, and is a very good reference for any musician or band seeking a successful music career. The book won't do the work for you, but it will give you a detailed insider's view on what you need to do to make it in the music business.

The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director, by Thomas Chippendale

Thomas Chippendale (1718–79) was the most famous and most skilled of England's master cabinet-makers. So synonymous with excellence in design and craftsmanship was he that his name has been given to the most splendid period of English furniture design.
In 1774, Chippendale issued a catalogue of all his designs, a magnificent compilation of 160 engraved plates representing the prevailing furniture styles, particularly the French (Louis XXV), Gothic, and Chinese-manner pieces for which he was best known. The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, the most important and thorough catalogue of furniture designs that had ever been published in England, was enormously influential, spreading quickly throughout the Continent and the colonies and guiding the style and construction of furniture everywhere. A second edition was formed the following year, and a third in 1762. Today this classic collection is a very rare and highly valued work.
This volume is an unaltered and unabridged republication of the 1762 edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director. The articles of furniture depicted are extremely varied: chairs, sofas, canopy and dome beds, window cornices, breakfast tables, shaving tables, commodes, chamber organs, cabinets, candle stands, cisterns, chimney pieces, picture frames, frets, and other decorations. The plates contain elegant drawings that show the unique combination of solidity of construction and lightness and grace that was the Chippendale trademark, along with many construction diagrams, elevations, and enlargements of moldings and other details. In addition to the plates, this volume also includes a supplement of photographs of sixteenth-century Chippendale-style pieces, including some executed by Chippendale, complete captions to the photos, and a short biographical sketch of Chippendale by N. I. Bienenstock, editor of Furniture World.
The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director is an indispensable guide for antiquarians, furniture dealers, and collectors, and a treasury of ideas for today's designers. Art lovers and other readers will also find it a delightful browsing book.

The book that made Chippendale famous.
By A Customer
The ball and claw foot is perhaps the one thing most commonly associated with Chippendale, but it is omitted entirely since it had gone out of fashion by the time he wrote the book. Instead, he includes Rococo, Chinese, and Gothic designs. The Rococo designs are extremely heavily ornamented, and fashioned in the most outlandish curved shapes: if you ever thought Pablo Picasso and "modern art" was too far out, take a look at these! The ribbon back chairs struck me as a particularly interesting design. The Chinese designs are far more subdued, and most have a bit of a swastika motif built into them. The editor for the modern version has added an appendix with several photographs of original Chippendale era furniture (not necessarily built by Chippendale himself), including several chosen to show that it really was possible to build the more elaborate designs. This is perhaps the single most historically significant book on furniture design ever written, and no furniture library would be complete without it.

Don't be intimidated
By Phillip P. Schmidt
This book is a classic and all the other reviews are right-on. If you're interested in woodworking--especially creating antique reproduction designs buy this book. It's cheap. Now if you're a woodworking novice, you'll likely be intimidated at the design detail saying "how can anyone ever carve that!" and you'll be tempted to throw it on the shelf and forget it. That's OK. If you keep doing woodworking, you'll find yourself coming back to look at Chippendale. You'll go to antique shows and museums and see the real thing and eventually gain the confidence to give it a try. The book is inspiring in its design. You should own it if you're interested in finewoodworking because over the years, your comfort with it will be a measure of your own woodworking maturity.

One of the greatest style-makers in the world.
By A Customer
This is the book to buy if you would like to know more about english rococo. Chippendale
used three different styles in his furniture,
french,gothic and chinese, mixed together.
To read and look at the pictures of this blend is
really interesting, and the price isn't anything to
talk about. This is a book you simply must have,
if you are interested in the rococo period

From Publishers Weekly
Through the adventures of a wise, courageous traveler, this excellent historical novel re-creates the era when the Moors were expelled from Spain, and much of North Africa and southern Europe was in turmoil. Hassan al-Wazzan was just a child the year Columbus sailed to the New World, and quarreling among Moslems led to their surrender of Granada to Catholic King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The gradual exile of Hassan's family from Spain is developed through recollections of his proud, erring father, his badly treated mother and her diplomat brother. As a merchant and emissary, Hassan travels from Fez to Cairo to Mecca andby misadventureto Rome and the Vatican, where he is later renamed Leo Africanus. The changes in his fortunes and family reflect shifts in the political realities of the late 14th and 15th centuries. Chronicling Hassan's political and personal lifeincluding the continuing conflict between the secular and religiousMaalouf offers a lurid history lesson in this sweeping, sympathetic portrayal of Islamic culture of the period.

From Library Journal
Written in the form of a memoir, this historical novel explores the meeting of two worldsIslam and Christendomthrough the adventures of real-life Arab traveler and geographer Hassan al-Wazzan. Born in Spain just as the Moors were expelled in 1492, Hassan grows up in North Africa and as a young man crosses the Sahara to Timbuctu, eventually reaching Cairo on the eve of its conquest by the Ottomans. In the last of his sojourns recounted by Maalouf, Hassan arrives in the Rome of Pope Leo X, who christens him Leo Africanus. Chronicling the loves and adventures of his wandering protagonist, the author deftly weaves into Hassan's account a score of the traveler's more famous contemporaries, including Columbus, the Medicis, Martin Luther, and Suleiman the Magnificent. Enjoyable reading for general readers. L.M. Lewis, Eastern Kentucky Univ., Richmond

Utterly fascinating. (BBC World Service)

Absoutely facinating―an evocation of a lost world. Leo's travels among the Moslems, Christians and Jews in his time shed startling light on our present dilemmas. (Thomas Fleming)

In Leo Africanus, Maalouf delivers a masterpiece of historical fiction
By Gary Hoggatt
One might not expect a geographer to be a great inspiration for historical fiction. But when that geographer travels the lands he chronicles at a time of great upheaval and turmoil and becomes embroiled in every sort of adventure and meets major historic figures along the way, it can indeed become a lively and engaging novel. Such is the case with the titular Moorish traveler in Amin Maalouf's 1986 book, Leo Africanus.

Born as al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi in Granada in the 1490's, Hasan is forced into exile as a child after the Spanish Reconquista. This sets the tone for his life, as he's constantly on the move. He and his family move to Fez, Morocco, with other refugees, where Hasan comes of age and begins one of his many runs of success. On the way back to Fez from Timbuktu on a diplomatic mission, he happens to be in Cairo when the Ottoman Empire conquers Egypt. Later, he's abducted by Spanish pirates, taken to Rome, and sold to the Pope, who befriends him, baptizes him as Leo Africanus, and employs him as a diplomat to the Ottoman's. Oh, and at the same time as Leo is in Rome, Martin Luther is starting the Reformation. While in Italy, Leo begins the geography of Africa and an Arabic dictionary for which he is remembered.

That brief summary is just the tip of the iceberg. Maalouf does a fantastic job of placing you in the varied and exotic places Leo finds himself and really puts you right there with Leo through all his highs and lows. As exciting as the major political action is, Maalouf vividly brings to life Leo's personal journey as well. You really begin to understand the way this eternal nomad feels as the tide of fate carries him on, and the troubles and joys he finds along the way, in his family, romantic, and professional lives.

Leo Africanus really is an excellent example of historical fiction at its finest. Not only do you get to see interesting historical events up close or understand how ancient societies worked, but you get an intensely personal and touching story as well. Maalouf writes the novel in the form of a memoir from Africanus to his son, and there's a wonderful sense of introspection in the work.

Maalouf also writes beautifully. The language, the pacing, the descriptions - the novel at times almost feels like poetry, but it never veers into self-indulgence. It's even more amazing when considering that the novel was originally published in French and translated by historian Peter Sluglett, who is to be commended for rendering the work in English so well.

I highly recommend Leo Africanus. It does everything historical fiction aims for and does so in a beautiful, poetic, thoughtful voice. I certainly plan to read more from Maalouf, both historical fiction and history. He's a fantastic writer and is very talented at bringing you right into the scene, the time, the society he's describing. Alright, enough already - go get yourself a copy Leo Africanus and get started!

Engaging read
By Dr. James E. Purpura
This is a wonderful book that depicts the adventures of Leo Africanus from the fall of Granada to the sack of Rome in the 16th Century. I preferred the first part of the book that described Granada and Fez as it came alive with details. The rest of the book was an interesting narrative, fast moving and engaging, but somewhat lacking in description and coverage, so it was a little harder to relive it with him. That said, I don't want to disuade anyone from reading this wonderful book. I couldn't put it down. It's a real treat for those of us interested in the Moslem perspective on this period.

A MIXED REVIEW
By nancy a schmitz
Leo Africanus is a difficult read in that the language is unusual and, at times, hard to follow. In many ways, the words seems more important than the story itself. The hero seems weak-charactered in that he changes religions and women easly as the plot, it seems, requires. The ending seemed unsettled in that the author seemed to not know how else to end it. However, the history and religious implications were fascinating. I would recommend this book but one needs a long time to digest it.

About the Author
When Canadian Dani Collins found romance novels in high school she immediately wondered how one trained for such an awesome job. She began writing, trying various genres, but always came back to her first love, Harlequin Presents. Often distracted by family and 'real' jobs, she continued writing, inspired by the romance message that if you hang in there you'll reach a happy ending. In May of 2012, Harlequin offered to buy her manuscript in a two book deal. She is living happily ever after.

Another knifing pain speared into her lower back, radiating like a spiked belt around her middle and clenching her torso in a merciless fist that stole her breath.

"Please call Alessandro," Octavia Ferrante begged in a pant, knotting her fists in the blanket beneath her as she braced herself for the next contraction. She was starting to fear that something would happen and she would never hear his voice again.

Her husband's cousin Primo Ferrante only sighed. His hold on the curtain dropped with disinterest as he turned away from the window. "I told you. He said he would come if the baby is born alive. Otherwise he's not going to put himself out."

She didn't want to believe it. Primo seemed to draw more enjoyment daily from tormenting her. She no longer trusted him and was sure this was more of his games.

But after this many months of being exiled to London by her husband, she was beginning to believe at least some of what Primo said. He was certainly correct in labeling her soft in the head. She'd let her life spiral beyond her grip. Pregnancy was an odd state, making you feel vulnerable in tiny degrees so you didn't realize how defenseless you were until the need to fight arose and there was nothing to draw on. She had insulated herself here, licking her wounds over Alessandro's rejection, and suddenly she had no resources. No one to help her.

Rebellion had backfired on her in the past so she rarely dissented, but she'd never been weak. At one time she'd been confident in herself, at least, if not truly assertive. She'd even felt a certain pride in those first few weeks of her marriage—

Another pain tore through her, making her grit her teeth to hold back a scream.

Alessandro, she silently begged, as a fresh wave of perspiration rose to ice her skin. But she knew all about men who wanted live births of their sons. Maybe Primo was telling the truth about her husband's lack of concern.

Call my mother then, she almost said as another pain gripped her, but her mother was also in Italy and would have even less sympathy. Eight times she'd gone through this. Seven of them fruitless labors. Eight, really, since Octavia was hardly counted as a valid heir.

Female. Only good for one thing. This.

Octavia had lived in fear all her life that she would suffer as her mother had, losing babies before she could deliver them. For good reason, apparently. This was not the idealistic, natural process the books promised. This was torture. The baby was coming a month too early, and the pain was terrifying. Something was wrong. She knew it.

"Where is the ambulance?" she cried as the pain throttled back enough that she could catch her breath and speak. "The clinic said to call one as soon as I went into labor. Did you do it?"

"You're being hysterical. These things take hours. You know that," Primo muttered.

He had said he would, but she would bet her life that he hadn't.

"Give me the phone," she demanded, holding out her hand. Why was he even here? Why wasn't her husband?

Her pains were coming on top of themselves. She had to wrap her arm across her swollen middle, fearful her skin would split under the stress.

"Please, Primo. I'm begging you. Take me to the hospital."

"You're an embarrassment to our family name," he said, sneering at her rumpled, sweaty form and tear-streaked face. "Where is all this pride in duty you once told me you had? Show some dignity."

His cruel words, delivered by a cruel man whom she hated with all her being, still had the power to wound. Because Alessandro had left her to this. Each time Primo verbally flayed her, she felt it as an uncaring swipe from Alessandro, like batting a fly. She had been his toy, perhaps, because he'd seemed so taken with her in those early days, but now she was nothing to him. Utterly forgotten. His indifference was a body blow every time she confronted it.

As anguished and defeated as that made her feel, she wasn't about to give birth on her bed, risking her baby's life and her own. Inching to the edge of the mattress, she braced herself on the night table, begging her knees to hold her. She'd crawl out of this room if she had to. Primo might wish her dead, but she wasn't going quietly.

"Is that blood?" Primo demanded sharply. His hawk-like gaze swooped from her tense face to the spotted blanket and back. His complexion grayed.

As she looked at the small mark, what little body heat remained in her drained from her face and chest and limbs. This was it, then. Like her mother, she was doomed to lose her baby. If she survived, this would happen again and again as she tried to live up to her side of the marital contract. Why, oh, why had she thought going through with an arranged marriage would finally earn her some respect from her father? Why had she let herself begin to care for her husband, hoping to earn his affection?

Why had she opened her heart and taken this unborn infant deep inside it, believing that finally there would be a human on this earth who loved her back?

No one was ever going to love her. She was the only person she could rely on. It was time to face that.

With a sob, she staggered across to where he'd left her phone on the windowsill and snatched it up. Bowing her head against the wall, silently praying, she dialed the number for emergency services and told them to send an ambulance.

Alessandro Ferrante saw his wife was calling and his pulse tripped. He immediately tamped down on the involuntary reaction, ruthlessly regaining control over himself and annoyed that he let her catch him so easily, even when she was on the other side of the continent.

But some measure of surprise was legitimate. She never called him anymore.

Which he was trying not to let bother him.

"Cara," he answered, ears straining for clues as to why she was calling now. It was late in London, even later here in Naples, but apparently they were both still up. Perhaps the baby was kicking. She had said a few times that she had trouble sleeping through that. It had made him feel the distance between them quite keenly…

He ignored the stab of something that might have been regret. The separation was necessary. He wouldn't give in to weak yearnings and wind up putting her in danger. That would be irresponsible.

"Sono io," Primo said into his ear. It's me.

Not Octavia then. Disappointment fell through him before he could deflect it. He habitually fought extreme degrees of emotion, never allowing them to rule his actions, but this marriage was becoming so very much not a marriage and it was beginning to frustrate him. It had started with such promise. They had had a remarkable compatibility, particularly in bed, but it had disintegrated into something he didn't know what to do with anymore.

Not for the first time, he questioned his decision to leave her in London, but all the facts remained the same: she was pregnant and at risk. Her mother had a history of losing babies. His mother's house in London was in the same city as a world-class specialist clinic, one that had been monitoring her closely. She was also safe from the threats here in Naples. His refusal to bring her home was absolutely the best thing for her and their unborn child.

His wife had taken to avoiding his calls, however. His cousin made all her reports, which was an intrusion Alessandro didn't appreciate. Why was Primo even still at his mother's house? How long did it take to get an apartment painted these days?

"Si?" Alessandro prompted his cousin now, tone sharpening with dismay.

"She's gone into labor," Primo said bluntly.

Alessandro sat up, arteries stinging with an immediate shot of adrenaline, the desk full of work before him forgotten. This was too early. Almost a month before her due date. He had planned to fly out next week. He reached for his tablet, already tapping out a message to his driver and pilot.

"It all happened very quickly or I would have called you sooner," Primo continued. "The ambulance was delayed and—well, there have been complications."

Silence followed.

Alessandro waited.

A knife of dread went through him, impossible to dodge. Primo liked to frame things in as much drama as possible. Sandro had talked to him about it more than once, told him that it only exacerbated situations, but Primo loved to grab and hold attention.

This wasn't the time.

Unless Primo was truly reluctant to deliver bad news.

Alessandro could hear the ticking of the clock that had been in his family for generations—tick, tick, tick. Like a bomb. He couldn't breathe. He was paralyzed, completely devoid of feeling and his mind was empty as he held off what he feared would be a repeat of another moment when tragedy unfolded. When tires screeched and—

"Yes?" he prompted, throat raspy and thick.

"They had to take her to the nearest hospital, not the one where she was scheduled to deliver. It's inundated with a bus crash, but they're taking her for surgery right now."

His nerves exploded with a rush of urgency, barely rational.

"Which hospital?" Alessandro demanded, fighting a ferocious grip of emotion that wanted to overstep reason and break down doors and walls and laws of man and nature to reach London. He grappled to stay calm, forcing himself to speak clearly even as his mind and heart raced. "I'm leaving now. I'll be there as soon as I can."

C* * *

Score one for state-run hospitals, was Octavia's first clear thought as her muddled brain came back from the anesthetic and worked out that Primo had no access to her son.

While he had followed her ambulance, she had clasped the female paramedic's hand, a kind of desperate fury gripping her. "Primo is not my husband. Not the father. Do not allow him near my baby. Tell the hospital to keep him out of the delivery room. I will hold you responsible if something happens."

She still felt irrational for saying it, but she just didn't trust him. Not after the way he'd moved into the mansion as if he owned it and had taken such great pains to make her miserable while he was there.

Despite his premature birth, her son was thankfully doing well. He was being kept in an incubator for observation and the nurse was about to take Octavia to the nursery to feed him.

The staff here was nice, treating her with more warmth and kindness than she'd seen in months. And Alessandro was on his way. He should be here soon, Primo had be-grudgingly told her as he'd paced her room.

Because it was a boy? Octavia tried not to feel bitter. Her father would be pleased, she supposed. Oddly, she discovered that she no longer cared what the men in her life expected of her. There was only one male to whom she wanted to answer and that would be on her own terms as his mother.

Still, part of her fluttered with a mixture of excitement and anxiety, knowing she'd finally see Alessandro again. He hadn't been here since Christmas and that had been a very brief few days. They hadn't even shared a bed, let alone the physical loving she'd been craving. Her condition had cut that off months ago.

Primo was telling the truth about one thing, she supposed. Alessandro not only thought she was fat and unattractive, but was taking his pleasure elsewhere.

So she shouldn't be feeling like this: as conflicted as she'd been in the weeks leading up to their wedding, when she'd been tormenting herself with worry over their wedding night. Would he think she was pretty? Would she please him?

With a pang in her heart, she recalled how silly it had been to stress about that side of things. Lovemaking had turned out to be the least of her concerns. Once they got past her virginal inhibitions, she'd adored making love with him, discovering things about herself and the fit of man and woman that astonished her.

But sex—or rather, lack thereof—had become yet one more way Alessandro had been showing her how little she interested him these days. It made her feel needy and pathetic that she ached for his attention, both in bed and out.

She'd learned long ago to roll that lonely emptiness into a wall of aloof indifference, though. She just wished she could feel aloof or indifferent at his impending arrival. But she couldn't.

"Mrs. Ferrante," the nurse, Wendy, greeted her as she brought in the empty wheelchair she'd fetched. "Let's take you to your little man."

Primo made no move to help Octavia and she was grateful, even though her emergency surgery had annihilated her abdominal muscles and the anesthetic still had her feeling nauseous and weak.

He did follow them from the room to the door of the nursery, though, obviously under the impression he could enter with them.

Wendy, bless her, said, "I'm sorry. Parents only in the nursery."

"Octavia," he prompted firmly.

"You'll have to meet Alessandro and show him where we are," she replied innocently.

The hospital wasn't that big. Alessandro was a resourceful man. He'd find her just fine, but Wendy was buzzing them into the nursery with her security card and the bright, warm room washed over Octavia like a hug of welcome. Beyond the windows, beams of morning sunlight broke the gray clouds hovering over London, sending angelic rays onto the rooftops and giving Octavia a lift of hope for the first time in ages.

"He's been calling for you," the heavyset nurse inside the nursery said. Her name tag read Hannah. "I'll fetch Miss Kelly while you're in here to keep an eye on this one," she said to Wendy, nodding at the only other baby in the room.

"The calm after the storm," Octavia said as she gingerly moved herself into one of the padded rocking chairs. "The emergency room was a zoo when I arrived last night."

The chaos had been alarming, adding to what was already a frightening situation. Tears of relief stung her eyes as she finally felt as if she could relax and hold the baby she'd been so worried for.

"I heard," Wendy responded as she gathered up the fussing baby from the incubator labeled Ferrante and loosely wrapped his diapered form in a blanket. "That's why Dr. Reynolds isn't in to see you yet. She had these two deliveries back-to-back, then they asked her to assist with that tourist bus crash that came in right before you two. She was here very late. Everyone was on their toes for hours. One of you was actually sewn up by our cosmetic surgeon so Dr. Reynolds could run to the other. Yes, we hear you, Mr. February," Wendy said as the baby in the other incubator grew more insistent.

Wendy came across to her, but something in the other baby's cry gave Octavia a stab of fretfulness. It was disconcerting, but Wendy distracted her, waiting with her baby, saying, "You'll want to take your arm out of the sleeve of your gown."

Octavia did, feeling immodest as she bared her breast, even though it was only her and the nurse in this very warm room. The baby Wendy offered her was clearly distressed and famished.

The Marriage His Must Keep
By Kindle Customer
This one of two books that intertwined due to the mix up of two babies born close together in the same hospital. Where they were switched at birth. This is the story of an arranged marriage that caused problems with in a family when the woman ended up marrying another man. And revenge was the key to the babies being switched. I read these books separately the first time but re-read them chapter by chapter till their story line took different turns. It was interesting that the author did a good job of continuity of the stories.

A Very good Book
By bratcat22
Another excellent book by Ms. Collins! At first I wanted to thump the hero upside the head for basically deserting his pregnant wife to the mercies of his unscrupulous cousin. The intentional baby swap at the hospital was really mean! Luckily, it opened the hero's eyes to the duplicity of his family and the real feelings he had for his arranged bride. I highly recommend this book. Another winner from Dani Collins!

The book was very slow and boring, I skimmed most of it
By Michele In Texas
This book was very disappointing after all the 5 star reviews. The big misunderstanding happened in the beginning of the book. There was really nothing to resolve as the couple was already married. The book was very slow and boring, I skimmed most of it. Save your money.
