Ryan Mitchell has ten years of programming experience, including Java, C, Perl, PHP, and Python. In addition to "traditional" programming, she specializes in web technologies, with three years of Drupal development experience, and is Sitecore developer certifi ed. I recommend this book for programmers wanting to build web tools using Java

I don't often leave reviews for technical books (I've been reading them for 35 years:). I also am cautious about buying technical books more than a year old. That said, I felt the author did a really good job here and I recommend this book for programmers wanting to build web tools using Java. The ideal reader would have a strong understanding of code and OOP, but not necessarily Java. The book doesn't cover all the details but gives you plenty to start with and the author is very good about providing links to additional resources. For me, the examples in the beginning of the book all worked well. Some of the examples deeper in worked with minor fixes.

The book covered Jsoup well enough for me to make use of it and it was easy for me to expand to advanced uses using online resources. HTMLUnit was introduced and a good example for working with forms was provided. Again I was easily able to expand on what the book covered using online resources.

My hat is off to the author for tackling distributed computing in the last chapter. Well done. This is the best introduction to RMI that I've come across.

I got this book to supplement the "Web Scraping with ...

I got this book to supplement the "Web Scraping with Python" book by the same author. I have much more experience in Java than Python and was hoping to stick with what i know. That being said, there are a couple issues i have come across in this book. The first and most problematic is that Ive struggled to get the example code to run. With the help of some online videos Ive gotten things moving, but now there is the task of matching up what the author has done with the outside tutorial and figuring out how to combine them to continue the rest of the book. The other issue i have found with the book is that this book tries to be too many things to the reader. In the introduction the author makes some statements about how this isn't a book on learning Java; yet there is a section on how two write your first Java program. Additionally, there are sections through out the book describing what code comments are, how to write a class, and other somewhat fundamental Java instructions. I wish the book focused more on the task at hand, web scraping, and less on how to write in Java.

This book does a poor job of explaining the concepts on scrapping html. The book gives a few working programs that can be reused if you have a good understanding Java to start with.

The best reference book of the bizarre you'll find

This book is epic. We're talking about 500+ pages, dictionary-style, of bizarre, abnormal, eccentric individuals from the ages. The author includes for categories for consideration: contrarians, theorists, visionaries, and entertainers. All of my favorites are here: visionaries with horrible personal quirks, like Tesla and his pigeons, or Howard Hughes and his jars of pee and hotel room bunkers; writers like Burroughs and artists like Warhol; the guy that built the coral castle down in Florida; and Hiroo Onoda, the Japanese soldier who was still operating command-style until 1974, unaware that WW2 had ended.

But what makes this book such a joy is that I could flip open to any random page and find someone I didn't even know existed, people who were janitors by day but wrote 11,000-page novels at night, only discovered after their death; people building castles and starting cults and living on a dollar a year even though they were millionaires and digging out massive underground gardens in Fresno that looked like Italian catacombs. As a kid, I practically memorized the Guinness book of world records, so I absolutely eat this stuff up.

This book is the ultimate bathroom reader, something to open to a random page for a quick entry or two, but it's also hugely entertaining to read from A to Z. Keep a copy of wikipedia handy and wander down the k-hole when you find a good entry, but be warned that this could make the book take a month to finish. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Neil Bingham is a historian of architecture and design. He is curator of contemporary architectural collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and was previously architectural drawings curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the Royal Institute of British Architecture. His numerous published works include Masterworks: Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts (2011), Fantasy Architecture, 1500–2036 (2004) and Modern Retro: Living with Mid-Century Style (2000).

A Treasure Chest!

This is an amazing collection of architectural drawings--from the most meticulously detailed perspectives to abstract notions for structures, and in just about every imaginable medium. The variety is incredible and should appeal to anyone with any sort of interest in graphic arts, whether or not you are passionate about architecture per se. It's a book of wonderful art works. Some of the ideas were realized as actual structures, and some not. Besides being moved by the art works, it's fascinating to read the descriptions and learn the intentions behind each architect's plan. I recommend it without reservation.

Good, but......

I have enjoyed the book. It contains drawings of buildings and structures I would never have known about otherwise. Many of these drawings have considerable artistic merit. My only mild complaint is that the book whet my appetite, regarding a number of the drawings, for a lot more information about the architect/artist and the structures depicted (and more information about why many of them were never built). In other words, I wish there had been additional text and greater detail.

The book is a must for any architect or designer. It is a wonderful collection of drawings, sketches, renderings, etc. Mr. Bingham adds just enough information and background to each photo to educate the reader. Well done!

I want to join all 5 star previous reviews because this book worth it. It covers Hendrix life from the music point of view - the influences and his musical endevour.

An Excellent Review of One Who Dared to Kiss the Sky

This coffee table sized tome would make a perfect gift for anyone with an avocation for all things Hendrix. This is a well researched and documented account of the career and personal history of Jimi Hendrix. Shadwick has done a terrific job casting the historical setting that made both his music nad himself possible. While not the musicologist's tome that Lewis Porter did on John Coltrane, the research and writing here is absolutely first rate.
Shadwick clearly sets an historical line that preceeded Hendrix as musician and showman both in the course of R and B and Blues and Jazz (louis Jordan, T Bone Walker, the Isleys, etc) as well as that mix of Cherokee and African family heritage and culture that made him so unique. I'm not clear whether or not this has the official approval of the Hendrix Estate, but it should. It is a compassionate, yet unblinking study of his intrepid courage, his core humble hamnity, and the havoc wrought by the struggles and the success in a world of rock going crazy. In so many ways the "cult of personality" was born around and out of the fascination and adoration of Jimi Hendrix, first and foremost as a musician, and as just this wild hippie, which image became the whale that swallowed the Jonah of new music. At a time when he most needed to retreat from being "Jimi Hendrix" an entire network had contrived to ensnare him The dismay expressed by Mitchell, Redding and Cox is squarely legitimate and indicts for all time those whose msiion it was to consume him.
It clearly jumps out at you who was loyal to Hendrix as a human being, who sycophantically fed off him like a pernicious cancer, destroying a brilliant and yet essentially very kind man. It will aways be one of the great unanswered questions as to where he might have gone with his music. In the case of Coltrane, John had come to contemplate the face of God and may not have been able to articulate any further the rapture he experienced, and thus he may not have died so much as ascended into heaven.
In the case of Hendrix, he had inadvertently grasped onto death's doorhandle and while looking for a way to rise like a Phoenix from what he had clearly perceived as an exhausted road, he did not so much select his end as be virtually tossed from the window while scanning the horizon for a new rising sun.
The book is loaded with great photos and an index, set of references and a discography that is definitively well documented. The interviews recounted with friends, family, loved ones and villains is even handed and objective. This is a terrific book, definitely the best there is about a man whose music impacted and changed forever the way dedicated artists considered their craft. And no one has played the guitar the same way since Jimi Hendrix. He changed everything.

Getting Inside Jimi's Musical Mind

So much has been written about Jimi Hendrix, do we really need another full length book? Fortunately, the answer is a resounding "yes"! Keith Shadwick has given us a fresh perspective on Hendrix, one that took this reader on a bit of a travel through time. What we've been missing all these years is a comprehensive source that cuts out all of the superfluous junk and gets down to that which was real, at that time - how it affected the music and how the music affected it.
Electric Gypsy (Harry Shapiro) is an excellent book in that it has the bulk of the factual information on Jimi's life, maybe even too much information. But, in its quest for all things encyclopedic, it seemed to miss out on the spirit of the time that Jimi lived in. Setting The Record Straight (Eddie Karmer and John McDermott) partially bridged this chasm, by taking the reader into not only the studio where Jimi and his bandmates laid down the tracks, but into Jimi's musical mind - the kinds of sounds he wanted to find, where he thought his music could go in the future. In short, it took us into some of Jimi's dreams. Between these two extremes, one can find much middle ground, most of it far more towards the Electric Gypsy camp. To get closer to the man himself and the realities of the world as it was when he was making his mark, one was almost better off searching out vintage magazines, such as Guitar World, Rolling Stone, etc.
But now we have Jimi Hendrix: Musician. The changes brought on by the simple realities of Jimi's musical life are given perspective in this book fare more completely than ever before. We are given glimpses of the journey and not just a facimile of the final destination. And those glimpses provide color so we can see more clearly how difficult it must have been to endure the musician's life back when Jimi was starving. Not only that, we can share in the joy of the good times and also the frustrations Jimi felt when all was not well during his last years.
Jimi's musical tenure was rooted right in the middle of the most incredible of times, when social change moved music and music attempted to cause social change. Many authors have struggled to put the reader into that space and time, but Keith Sedgewick has managed to sail those waters brilliantly.

Computational is a new and rapidly changing field as new research and techniques are being developed on an almost daily basis. It is to the credit of the author and publisher that they have been able to put together such a complete and well organized handbook this early.

Clearly this field is not ready for a standard text to have been developed, indeed it is clearly too much for even one writer. Instead, the editor calls this 'truly a community effort, with the chapters authored by leading researchers widely recognized for their research contributions and expertise.'

In all there are 38 specific chapters organized into eight major parts. The parts are: Sequence Alignments, String Data Strctures, Genome Assembly and EST Clustering, Genome-Scale Computational Methods, Microarrays and Gene Expression Analysis, Computatinal Structural biology, Bioinformatic Databases and Data Mining. The authors represent a who's who of the major American research establishments as well as from Germany, Italy, Russia, Canada, Japan, Isreal, and India.

The book could be used as a text but is probably more useful to the researcher looking for either an introduction to the field in general or go learn about areas outside his particular area of expertise.

The encyclopedia

Bioinformatics is too big a field to cover in one book, but this thousand-pager comes close. Its 38 chapters give good summaries of just about every major topic in bioinformatics. Since the table of contents isn't visible here (as of this writing), I'll list the major headings into which the chapters are divided:

* Sequence alignments

* String data structures

* Genome assmebly and EST clustering

* Genome-scale computational methods

* Phylogenetics

* Microarrays and expression analysis

* Computational structural biology

* Bioinformatic databases and data mining

A few things are missing, such as RNA structure prediction and mass spec analysis of proteins. Regulatory networks get only brief mention, perhaps because the topic is still too researchy for any body of accepted practice. These are quibbles, though. The book does a very good job of providing brief surveys of many topics, with an extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter.

This doesn't replace other books that examine specific topics in greater depth. Instead, it provides quick surveys of many topics, and lots of pointers for further information. For the subjects it covers, it's a great starting point.

A Practical, Readable Guide

Marsha Woodard's book is the natural product of her years of personal experience, going herself as a Christian missionary and working extensively to counsel, train, and prepare others to go. She starts at the obvious - but often overlooked - beginning: what does the Bible say about missions? She develops a logical step-by-step process to verify, clarify, and hone one's vision and direction, then moves on to practical and proactive stages of preparation. Sprinkled throughout with anecdotes from the author's missions career, this book is very readable, saying enough without saying too much. The checklists and worksheets in the appendices are, in themselves, worth the price of the book.

Great book - lots of practical advice

This is an excellent book intented for people going into Christian missions, particularly in other countries and cultures. There is practical advice and check lists of things to do or to think about in each chapter. It covers aspects such as pre-missions planning, how to avoid making cultural mistakes, and many other topics.
Highly recommended.

Un libro excelente para Pastores (o personas considerando el ministerio) dise�ado para animar, dirigir, corregir y apoyar a los ministros que estamos constantemente en la batalla. Con un coraz�n relevante que se identifica hasta lo m�s profundo de nuestros retos, el autor nos ofrece esperanza y sabidur�a de una manera pr�ctica y accesible. Una vez que comenc� a leerlo, no me pude detener. Lo le� en menos de tres d�as y lo subraye, marque y anot� como si fuera un libro de texto en el seminario. Aprend� m�s realidad de ministerio en este libro que en la teor�a del colegio Biblico. Realmente todo pastor tiene que incluir este libro en su biblioteca. Ojal� lo pudieran sacar en ingles.

Very nicely done...

I've been a developer for over 24 years and I've been writing PHP applications for the DHS for over 10 years. I purchased this book as a desk reference and have found it very useful. It's well organized, so I can find what I'm looking for in a snap. I don't have time to read it from cover to cover, but what I have read has been very insightful and well worth the purchase price. I recommend this book over all others. I also purchased the PHP book, you know the one with the funny animals, and it was absolutely the worse book I ever read. It was not helpful at all. It was written by too many authors and left me confused. Yes, wording the same thing in 2 different ways becomes very confusing. I think I'll stick with the Experts from now on. Hope this helps.

Minor typing errors and code errors are there, but if you are an experienced code examiner, they pose no hinder for learning the interesting PHP language. PHP is changing rapidly, so I gathered much from this book, even if all the changes made to this language are not presented in this newest book. For the novice, though, a substantial basis to start learning!

Though it mentions the legacy functions the new ones replace it does not provide a lot of detail on the legacy functions. So if you are planning on updating/optimizing your legacy PHP code, this book will definitely help.
