This book is WONDERFUL!
By Arbela
I'm so impressed with how this book was put together. The lessons are fool proof for the parent, as they are written with detailed directions. New sounds are gradually worked into previously mastered tasks so that the child is never given more than he/she can handle (this does wonders for my daughter's reading confidence). Before you know it, your child is reading three and four paragraphs, and the process of getting there wasn't painful at all!
One note: I have read other reviews from parents using this book with 3 and 4 year olds. Certainly, if your preschooler shows an interest in reading, this book is an excellent choice. But NOTHING will work unless your child is READY to learn, not even "100 Lessons." Reading readiness happens at different ages (like every other milestone in childhood), and we as parents must respect our children's personal timetables (difficult to do sometimes, I know). Hey, remember when WE were in kindergarten? We spent our days playing, painting, napping (do they even nap anymore these days). Reading came along in first grade, and many of us may not have been ready to learn until then.
That said, buy the book and use it when your particular family is ready ~ ENJOY! :o)

Ignore the slow start, this book really works!
By James LeMay
This book starts painfully slowly, but my advice is "hold on." At first, I couldn't stand the agonizingly plodding pace. And it wasn't just impatient me. My three year old didn't see the point of saying the list of words as slowly. But we gave it a chance anyway, after all the good Amazon reviews and marketing hype on the book itself. By a quarter of the way through, we began to look forward to reading time. One small addition I made to the scripted course was to invite in stuffed animal guest teachers (see suggestion 1 below). It worked like a charm.
I love the way the parent's part is scripted. The script turns anyone who can read into a patient, supportive master teacher! I love the way all sorts of short activities make up each lesson - very balanced. Best of all is the way this book's lessons touch all the bases. They connect letter sounds with words with stories with writing and finally, with reading comprehension, the point of the whole exercise. I really appreciate the short stories and the picture from the story with discussion questions. Now that I've talked to some teachers, this balanced, comprehensive approach is a perfect way to start a child reading. It doesn't lack any aspect that they will use later, or emphasize one to the exclusion of the others.
I didn't expect the writing, but I am very happy that it's in there. I bought the book for my three year old, but I am putting my 5 year old through it too, because it is so complete and methodical.
When I first saw the phonetic alphabet, I thought it was a little strange. But my child has no trouble recognizing the joined "sh" symbol as an "s" and an "h." And the "sh" is a single sound in his mind, as are "s" and "h." The notation caused us no problem at all, and I only mention it because another reviewer found it problematic. We did not. Likewise, I wasn't disturbed by short e not being mentioned sooner. Who cares? The order presented was gradual, and as logical as any other.(Although it led to a lot of stories about ants.)
I would also offer a few suggestions:
1. If your child loves his or her stuffed animals (or Power Rangers, etc.), then you can use them to be "guest teachers." When I started with this book, I hadn't yet come up with this diversionary tactic, and sometimes working through a lesson was harder than it needed to be. With a beanie baby teaching, my three year old is far more interested in the lessons. My boy picks which animals will help each night, and then he listens intently to them. They help sound out words, rhyme, and watch him write. They are much more interesting than old Daddy, as they are allowed to have excessive personality! When it is time to find certain words in the story, my son doesn't like to just point to the requested word. He prefers to race the beanie-baby guest teacher to the words. (The beanie baby invariably loses.) When it is time to write letters, the beanie baby counts them in Spanish. And so on.
2. Check out some of the "We Both Read" books to supplement toward the end of this book. The "We Both Read" series has a complicated left page for the adult, and a simple right page for the child. You take turns reading, and continue the "reading together" experience beyond the 100 easy lessons.
So after a slow and frustrating start, which in retrospect was absolutely necessary, we both look forward to our daily reading time. We brought in the beanie babies to inject the missing element of fun. I know Matthew will have a solid foundation in all the parts of written communication, and Matthew likes the fact that his favorite stuffed animals are teaching him to read.
Five stars. Awaiting "Human Relationships in 100 Easy Lessons."

Great book - but don't fall for the 100 "easy 20min" lesson
By JN Trotter
I had to write this after reading the rave reviews from parents of 3 year olds who taught their kids to read in 12 min. a night in less than 3 months. Don't buy this book if that is what you expect.
Don't get me wrong this is a GREAT book. I highly recommend it. But, it is NOT EASY (at least not for every child).
My nearly 5 begged "Please, please teach me to read Mommy". After about 20 lessons of this book she begged "Please, please I don't want to read". So we put it aside for a few months. When she asked to start again we started over at lesson 1 and went more slowly. We reviewed the previous lesson, did a new lesson, read a "Bob Book",played letter bingo. Some days we didn't do a new lesson - we just read a "Bob book" or reviewed an old lesson. YOU HAVE TO GO AT YOUR KIDS PACE. TAKE YOUR CUES FROM YOUR CHILD.
We're on lesson 94. I don't know if she reads at a 2nd grade level and I don't care. She is reading and excited about reading - and that's what it's all about.

Mission and Money: Understanding the University, by Burton A. Weisbrod, Jeffrey P. Ballou, Evelyn D. Asch

Mission and Money goes beyond the common focus on elite universities and examines the entire higher education industry, including the rapidly growing for-profit schools. The sector includes research universities, four-year colleges, two-year schools, and non-degree-granting career academies. Many institutions pursue mission-related activities that are often unprofitable and engage in profitable revenue raising activities to finance them. This book contains a good deal of original research on schools' revenue sources from tuition, donations, research, patents, endowments, and other activities. It considers lobbying, distance education, and the world market, as well as advertising, branding, and reputation. The pursuit of revenue, while essential to achieve the mission of higher learning, is sometimes in conflict with that mission itself. The tension between mission and money is also highlighted in the chapter on the profitability of intercollegiate athletics. The concluding chapter investigates implications of the analysis for public policy.

Review
"Mission and Money offers a wealth of fascinating information and analyses, nicely balanced between theoretical and statistical investigations (with most of the technical material relegated to the appendix), presentation of broad facts and of specific examples. The analysis is intelligent and careful, the writing is clear, and the conclusions (nicely summarized at the end of each chapter) are well-grounded and credible. Those interested in higher education as well as in the broader question of the role of different types of organization in the contemporary economy, will find the book of great value." - Avner Ben-Ner, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota

"An excellent volume. The art of university administration is finding the right balance between revenue raising and the academic mission so that neither dominates the other. In the one case, the university would cease being a university at all and would be just a business, while in the other it might go bankrupt. Given the current emphasis on universities in the marketplace, this is a timely volume with a thorough and useful treatment of the various revenue sources in play and how they influence the more lofty mission of the university." - David Breneman, Curry School of Education, University of Virginia

"Mission and Money is the most comprehensive treatment of the economics of the higher education industry that I have seen in recent years. Written in an easily accessible style, it stresses that competition goes on within and between all sectors of the industry and employs the unifying theme that academic institutions are involved in both mission-oriented and money-raising activities to explain a wide variety of institutional behaviors and then concludes with the implications of its analysis for public policy. It is a 'must read' for all of us engaged in the study and administration of higher education institutions, as well as those engaged in the development of higher education policy." - Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Director, Higher Education Research Institute, Cornell University

"Mission and Money provides a fresh perspective on the evolving higher education industry, including two-year institutions and for-profits and how they interact with public and private colleges and universities. The book presents a wealth of illuminating data but also raises basic questions about how to interpret it, such as 'What is a donation?' and 'How do accounting rules influence reported profits and losses from college sports?'" - John Goddeeris, Associate Dean, Michigan State University

"Mission and Money: Understanding the University will establish itself immediately as the principal 'go-to' source for information about the business side of higher education in America. Whether it is a discussion of the large variety of organizational forms, the incredible number of revenue-raising devices, sophisticated marketing techniques, the selection and compensation of top administrators, or the 'real' economics of big-time collegiate athletics, it is all here and readily accessible to the interested reader. The authors have made sense of the byzantine set of business institutions that make up our higher-education industry, though they never lose sight of the 'mission' part of the title, the education goal so often in conflict with the necessary revenue-raising role." - Henry G. Manne, Dean Emeritus, George Mason University School of Law

"When the Attorney General of the United States some years ago filed an antitrust action against a dozen top universities for comparing among themselves how much aid to offer scholarship students, he underscored just how far we'd come from the idyllic years in which higher education stood apart from the rest of the American economy. Today everyone recognizes that private and public research universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and for-profit schools form a highly competitive industry, perhaps the nation's most important engine of economic growth. But no one understands better than Burton Weisbrod and his co-authors the complex commercial forces that are transforming the business and its managers. The action in their book stretches from the admissions office, the football stadium, and the biotech labs to corporate boardrooms, Madison Avenue, and the halls of Congress." - David Warsh, EconomicPrincipals.com and author of Knowledge and the Wealth of Nations: A Story of Economic Discovery

"The usual financial concerns about higher education center around rising tuition, but Weisbrod, Jeffrey P. Ballou, and Evelyn D. Asch, specialists in economics and public policy, present a much more extensive analysis of the different types of revenue pursued by colleges and universities and their complex influences on educational mission. The authors create the 'two-good framework' to explore the tension between institutional pursuit of mission-including teaching, research, and service-and revenue seeking. They explain that fulfilling mission can restrain revenue seeking while increasing revenue can undermine mission, and they advise administrators to evaluate impacts before selecting policies. Their comprehensive approach is particularly useful, examining a variety of possible revenue sources from tuition, donations, and endowments to patents, lobbying, and intercollegiate athletics and comparing interactions in the public, nonprofit, and for-profit sectors. The book concludes with a look at public policy issues, where the authors urge the public and government officials to consider the full range of relevant factors before pursuing any simple 'fixes.' The solid research, careful analysis, and extensive bibliography make this an important addition to academic libraries as well as general libraries with serious readers. - Library Journal

Terrific. Definitely recommended.

I have played the piano since I was 11. I only took lessons for about two years, and I've always regretted quitting. However, I love to play the piano and am a fairly good master of simplified pieces.

When the opportunity to review The Bollywood Piano came, I was intrigued. I was not familiar with any Bollywood music, and the idea that one book could teach you the basics in two days. I'm pleased to say that the book lived up to my expectations.

I sat down at the piano, with the book and my ten-year old son. Since piano lessons aren't an option for us at the moment, I've been going through my old primary music books with him and he has grasped the concept of some things. However, within minutes of sitting down with The Bollywood Piano, he was playing Ode to Joy with his right hand. I love hearing my son play Beethoven, even just a simplified version!

I learned a great deal from the book: so many points and piano principles that I didn't remember, if I had known them at all. It really is a great, overall instruction manual. You can go through it as fast or as slowly as you want. We're taking a bit of a slow route with it.

Easily recommended for those wanting to learn how to play the piano or who want something to use as they teach their children.

Ethical Wisdom: The Search for a Moral Life, by Mark Matousek

In this engagingly written and deeply insightful book, bestselling author Mark Matousek explores a perennially troubling question: How can we be both good and evil?

Contrary to what we’ve been taught in our reason-obsessed culture, argues Matousek, emotions are the bedrock of ethical life; without them, human beings cannot be empathic, moral, or good. But how do we make the judgment call between self-interest and caring for others? What does being good really mean? Which parts of morality are biological, which ethical? When should instinct be trusted and when does it lead us into trouble? How can we know ourselves to be good amidst the hypocrisy, fears, and sabotaging appetites that pervade our two-sided natures?

Drawing on the latest scientific research and interviews with social scientists, spiritual leaders, ex-cons, altruists, and philosophers, Matousek examines morality from all angles in this thoroughly entertaining and helpful guide to crossing one’s own murky moral terrain.

From Publishers Weekly
Matousek (Sex Death Enlightenment) makes a case for why human beings are inherently ethical creatures in a provocative book that suffers from uneven execution. Wired from birth with "mirror neurons" that function involuntarily, and cause us, for instance, to tear up when others cry: "Emotions, not reason," Matousek asserts, "are the bedrock of ethical life." Drawing on philosophy, neurological and psychiatric research, anthropology, pop psychology, and mysticism, he debunks the belief that organized religion is a necessary framework for an ethical sense, and demonstrates that moral behavior evolves out of a complex interaction between our built-in empathy for those we identify as like ourselves, and the way we respond (or don't respond) to the supposedly abstract suffering of those we deem as "other." In the hands of an Oliver Sacks, this braiding of the scientific, moral, and anecdotal could be revelatory; Matousek, however, repeatedly substitutes opinions and inferences for fact, sapping his argument's credibility and his reader's patience. Descartes meets Aesop
By Gwenyth Jackaway, Ph.D.
Ethical Wisdom is a remarkable book. In this deeply engaging exploration of some of life's most challenging issues, Mark Matousek achieves a rare synthesis: the successful intermingling of timeless philosophical inquiry, cutting edge academic research and the age old art of the teaching story. Interweaving a breathtaking synthesis of a vast range of scholarship with captivating vignettes and riveting interviews, Ethical Wisdom weaves together an impressive range of disciplines and perspectives, managing to avoid common political, religious and moral pitfalls that often cloud discussions of such issues. Bringing his considerable talents to the challenge of presenting complex concepts in an accessible manner, Matousek achieves that elusive goal: entertaining while educating. As a college professor, I can only dream of reaching, in my classroom what Matousek achieves in these pages.

First impression: Too lite, too superficial, assumes too much
By English Setter
This seems to be intended to be uplifting and inspirational -- "positive" -- rather than particularly thoughtful or searching. It draws on many sources, but doesn't seek out the disagreements and tensions between those sources. It assumes that morality has five common supports or pillars, and therefore, that ethics/morality is more or less universal and stable over time. This seems highly dubious, so I would have appreciated a deeper look at the differences between moralities and mores in different cultures. But it seems that this subject is raised and then abandoned.

The mix here is Buddhism + Judaism + feminism + liberalism + contemporary American cultural influences + environmentalism + evolutionary biology + brain research. (But none of the inevitable disagreements between these perspectives are really explored.) There's nothing wrong with that -- it's rather congenial to me, but not challenging.

It seems that Matousek doesn't bother to get a lot of little things right, and simply makes stuff up when he wants to. For instance, is it meaningful or correct to say we only use twenty percent of our brains? Another example: A reference to a funny scene in "Being John Malkovich" which misunderstands the reason why everything becomes "Malkovich": The reason is that it's a feedback loop caused by the bizarre situation, *not* that the *director* ventures inside the movie star's head.

In sum: In large and in small, this raises a lot of interesting points and theories but doesn't synthesize them well, or discuss them perceptively, so I don't think it's worth a highly careful read or a thorough critique. It's really more of a feel-good, try-a-little-harder sort of book. Not as deep as your average New Yorker article, and more scattered.

If I'm wrong about this, on second glance, I'll say so, but my gut tells me this isn't a book that's worth the effort.

From *is* to *ought*: There *are* a lot of good, searching books out there, so we *ought* to pay attention to those, and challenge ourselves instead of reading Ethics Lite.
