They also assess the feasibility of creating incentives and value in wetlands to support sustainable use. Drawing on nine empirical case studies, this book highlights the different ways in which sustainable use of wetlands has been sought, each case focusing on specific issues about wetlands, agriculture and livelihoods.

About the Author

Greg Ward Larson is a member of the technical staff at Silicon Graphics Inc. and most recently was a staff scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he developed Radiance.

Rob Shakespeare is Associate Professor of Theatre and Drama and director of the Theatre Computer Visualization Center at Indiana University, as well as a lighting designer specializing in dramatic lighting.

Many LD+A readers know Radiance as a lighting design and analysis program that was developed by Greg Ward (Larson) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Those who have investigated Radiance know that it is freely available, but usable only if you have a UNIX workstation and the patience to master more than 50 software tools. In ten years, it has attracted a coterie of fewer than 400 dedicated users.
Rendering with Radiance will undoubtedly change this. Originally conceived as a UNIX-style technical manual, the book is much more. It offers several tutorials, numerous application examples, and detailed discussions of the program's underlying mathematical algorithms. The accompanying CD-ROM includes example images, Radiance models and material libraries, reference manuals, and fully commented C source code for Radiance 3.1.
Despite first impressions, this book is not about computer graphics. The Radiance Lighting Simulation and Rendering System was created for advanced lighting designers and academic researchers, and more than half of the book is devoted to applying Radiance to real-world lighting problems. Ward Larson, Shakespeare and three contributing experts discuss luminaire modeling and lighting analysis, daylight simulation, animation, roadway lighting, theatre lighting, and exterior lighting. Even if you have committed yourself to using architectural visualization programs such as Lightscape and RadioRay, you will find an abundance of useful information in this book.
Radiance is the only software program that faithfully models the physical behavior of light, especially specular and semispecular reflections. It has a steep learning curve, but the quality of the architectural renderings it produces is unequalled by any commercial product. With Rendering with Radiance, we now have a user's manual that fully complements the capabilities of its namesake.
This truly is a remarkable book. Unlike most computer graphics texts, it presents lengthy discussions of IES photometric data files, luminance meters and spectrophotometers, the CIE overcast sky model, roadway light metrics, veiling luminance, spectral transmission data, and much more. The major algorithms used by Radiance are fully documented, including discussions of their limitations. There is more information in this book on lighting software use and design than can be found in all other books combined.
The major disadvantage of Radiance is that it was developed for UNIX workstations. In the past, this restricted the use of the program (really a set of UNIX tools) mostly to academic researchers. However, the freely-available and popular UNIX clone Linux now allows Radiance to be run with few difficulties on Windows and Macintosh computers.

As a contributor to the text, I am a bit biased, but I do think you will find the book's numerous chapters very helpful for folks of a wide range of skill levels. It is a great resource guide, reference book and tutorial. It includes the Radiance executables for a few Unix platforms on the CD-ROM! These alone will save you an hour or two. The book is well worth the money, but don't take my word for it.

Back by popular demand, Rendering with Radiance, Revised Edition is now available at a lower price. The authors have retained the publishing rights from Morgan Kaufman and are now self-publishing the book. It should be available through Amazon.com and others shortly. The new ISBN is 0-9745381-0-8. The revised edition corrects some typos, and eliminates the color plates and CD-ROM.

I just had to finish off this series.. I fell in love with Axel his is a Prince that every girl is looking for. He stepped in at a bad time and turned it into the best time of Jaida life. I just wanted to know why her mother and brothers would put doubt into her head about how she feel about Axel..I just love her relationship with her dad.

Great military action adventure story

I love military fiction and particularly those stories that are fast-paced and full of action. I just stumbled upon author Eric Meyer and was thrilled with the first of his books that I've had a chance to read, "Black Ops Heroes of Afghanistan". The story of an undercover rescue mission of a CIA operative, this is a harrowing tale behind enemy lines. The main character, Rafe Stoner, is both tough and likable and the action that he sees with his sidekick, Greg Blum, felt very real to me. A great read that has me wanting more. Recommended.

Exciting and quite well written

Of course, with these kind of books, a fast-paced plot filled with plenty of action and twists and turns is absolutely essential; in this regard, I think the author has it spot on. Besides that, I also found the dialogue in Eric Meyer's book to be especially well-structured and it does a great job of helping portray the characters in a way that makes the majority of them seem dynamic and far from two-dimensional. I’d be more than willing to bet that the author has had quite some extensive military experience, as it seems to be evident through the accuracy and detail throughout the writing, which is probably influential in regard to the aforementioned.

Admittedly, I did find a few scenes and interactions between people to be a bit over-the-top and maybe playing on the warfare theme a little too much- but only a few parts stood out to me in this way.

I’d recommend this real to anyone looking for a raw, gritty and immersive story that flows nearly from start to finish due to great writing style; I’m a big fan of war thrillers in general, and found Black Ops to be quite satisfying.

Stoner and a Sniper...

Stoner gets hired to do a job and of course his pal Greg gets roped into it and then off they go into another battle through the streets and countryside of Afghanistan. Things quickly get out of control and eventually Stoner's two Desert Eagles get plenty of play time as drug lord thugs, corrupt police and other badies go down in the onslaught. Another fine read by Mr. Meyer.

Dr. William A. McEachern began teaching large sections of economic principles shortly after joining the University of Connecticut. Several years later he began offering teaching workshops around the country. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association conferred on him its Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He earlier won the Association's award for Distinguished Public Service. Dr. McEachern has published books and monographs on public finance, public policy, and industrial organization, including MANAGERIAL CONTROL AND PERFORMANCE (D.C. Heath and Company). His research has also appeared in edited volumes, such as READINGS IN PUBLIC CHOICE ECONOMICS (University of Michigan Press), INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON TEACHING AND LEARNING ECONOMICS (Edward Elgar Publishing), and RETHINKING ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES (Irwin Publishing), He has also published in a variety of refereed journals, including Economic Inquiry, National Tax Journal, Quarterly Review of Economic and Business, Journal of Industrial Economics, Kyklos, Econ Journal Watch, and Public Choice. I was introduced to Robert Hawker's writing through funny title of his commentary, 'The Poor Man's Commentary.' As I read his commentary, I immediately noticed how Christo-centric his comments were. He sees Christ everywhere in the Scriptures and applies to the hearts of believers, exhorting them to trust in this wonderful Savior. I was hooked. I wanted to read his writings more regularly and I thought his devotional book, 'The Poor Man's Morning and Evening' would be an excellent choice. I was not disappointed.

1. The devotional book is divided into morning & evening portions. Each portion deals with one or two verses. He explains the verse and immediately applies to the reader Christo-centrically. He is very apt at this.
2. Each portion (either morning or evening) ends with prayer, which is woven into his comments. I love this! My heart echoes his sentiment.
3. His words are easy to understand even though it was written about 200 years ago. Some words are archaic, but his meaning overall is clear and understandable.
4. The book has Scripture Index at the end of the book, where you can easily access any verse you might be searching.
5. The print is NOT modern (ie fonts are slightly blurry - not computerized prints, but old typeset), so you might need to get use to it. I hope in the future, the publisher will publish modern typeset edition.

All in all, I love this book! It is indeed "Christ everywhere" book for the soul!
