After the events of September 11, 2001, Stephen Coughlin was mobilized from his private sector career to the Intelligence Directorate at the Joint Chiefs of Staff to work in Targeting. Stephen Coughlin is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Security Policy and a Lincoln Fellow at the Claremont Institute. Along with Patrick Poole, he recently formed Unconstrained Analytics, Inc., a 501(c)3 dedicated to raising awareness of what constitutes a threat that our leaders seem disinclined to recognize or even make an effort to understand.

The book the White House does not want you to see.

In the interests of full disclosure, I haven't finished the nearly 800 pages yet. The book is so worthy of study, it takes some time simply to absorb. (note: 6/20/2015 I have finished reading the entire book, and I recommend it even more than previously).
In October, 2011, John Brennan, Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and currently the head of the CIA, wrote a letter on White House stationary directing US security agencies such as the FBI, CIA, military intelligence, and homeland security, to immediately stop any classes or training material on terrorism which mentioned Islam. Award-winning instructors such as Stephen Coughlin, who was constantly in demand for his knowledgeable and thorough preparations, were completely shut off from training security and intelligence personnel in the canonical, theological, and historical basis for those observant Muslims who are responsible for a majority of terrorism today. Not only were experts such as Coughlin bared from any further instruction, but trainees who had taken classes from them were given "re-education" classes, whatever that meant.
Coughlin has now taken all of his material, notes, references, slides, explanations, and conclusions, edited them extensively for organization and coherence, and has put them into a book. In other words, security personnel interested in understanding the thinking, philosophy, and objectives of most terrorists, can now get the full content and organization of Coughin's classes for $6 on the Kindle. A highly-regarded instructor and trainer, as a public service, has made the entire content of his presentations available to security personnel at a nominal price.
And, the material is available not only to security personnel, but to anyone who wishes an in-depth understanding of the philosophical basis and objectives of those who engage in jihad. It's an unparalleled opportunity to sit in on a class presented by one of the most respected and sought-after trainers (prior to 2011) for high-level officials responsible for US security.
I guarantee this material is crucial not only for those not versed in the concepts of jihad, but for those who think they understand the basis of jihad in Islamic doctrine. One surprise for me was that the concept of abrogation, or successive replacement of Koranic verses by later ones, is not just a way to explain Muhammad's inconsistencies, but abrogation is actually a critical feature in the development of jihad, as expounded in Sayyid Qutb's "Milestones".
Additional note after finishing the book. This is a warning. There's a lot of material in the book, and it takes a lot of focus, particularly with the many unfamiliar names and terminology. It's also depressing to see how completely the military and political leaders have failed the US citizens and the principles of the Constitution.
It also shows how sophisticated and determined the Islamic enemy is, and how determined to wipe out our liberties and freedoms. There's a tendency to view Muslims as somewhat unsophisticated and somewhat uncomfortable in the technological world. In fact, the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies have thoroughly mastered the levers of national and international power. This is very, very thoroughly documented. Organized Islam, as led by the Muslim Brotherhood, has a coherent philosophy, strategy, and tactical repertoire to displace Western laws and government with sharia. They have systematically co-opted even our language. "Catastrophic Failure" provides the tools to see through the lies, evasions, and manipulations. It does take an effort. The nexus of covert invasion is extensive.
The defense of liberty is not easy.

I have, since before the 2001 September attack on America taken an interest in Islam. Like many born and raised in the West (In my case Sydney Australia) I was aware of the need to do coalface research. I spent many hundreds of hours reading through what was considered by Muslim's to be Islam's primary, foundational documents. Added to this slog through Islamic text, from June 2001 to mid 2010 I regularly attended Islamic Meetings for Muslims by Muslims. In the first few years attending these Muslim gatherings I was more than often either the only non-Muslim or at the most one of less than a handful present. I have also spent a great deal of time conversing personally with Muslims from all over the world. Why am I telling you this? I wanted you to know that I have not lightly skimmed this subject so that you would take what I am going to say next with a considerable weight of seriousness:

A timely and comprehensive indictment of our national security operations and our surrender to hostile religious infiltration

Rarely has a book on national security been more timely and comprehensive in its research. This book ranks with J.F. Kennedy's book, "Why England Slept." We have already been in this latest war longer than World War II, and America will lose the war on terror unless our government and faith leaders take heed.
The Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security have been duped by Muslim Brotherhood organizations into being enforcers of a hostile information campaign tailored to deprive America of what it needs to know to defend itself against an existential threat. Both Republican and Democratic administrations have failed us. Instead of identifying and knowing the enemy, those responsible for our national security have actually drafted guidelines that prevent making any connection between religion and criminal activity -- even though the overwhelming source of worldwide terrorism has been from those who embrace Islam and the mandates of Islamic Sharia Law. President Obama has acknowledged that "the one organizing principle has been Islam." Ignoring this verifiable fact in our "War on Terror" is "to our great detriment." Worse yet, we have our-sourced our threat assessment to those who are more aligned ideologically with our enemies than with our own constitutional priorities. All of this is laid out like a prosecutor's case with graphic exhibits and documentation. There are plenty of examples of this professional malpractice, including the Ft. Hood massacre and the Boston Marathon bombing. But there are also recommended remedies including getting back to truly " knowing the enemy."
The appendix on Interfaith Outreach could almost be a book by itself. It details the folly of interfaith dialogue. Coughlin explains how it is actually used by Muslim Brotherhood organizations to erode the faith of Christians and Jews in preparation for kinetic jihad. “The opportunity cost of interfaith dialogue can be measured in the deaths of those who have been and will be killed knowing there is no effective voice to speak out and take action against groups like ISIS, al-Nusra, Boko Haram, and the Muslim Brotherhood.” Coughlin, who is probably Catholic, pulls no punches when castigating the Catholic Church for publishing disinformation, for allowing Pope Francis to be used by Islamists for political stunts, and for throwing Pope Benedict under the bus.
I strongly recommend this book both as a professional resource for government employees, law enforcement, and military personnel and as a personal database for opposing Interfaith Dialogue capers and other Islamic initiatives to designed impose Sharia Law on non-Muslim Americans.
