When Thangjam Manorama was arrested and killed in Manipur by the Assam Rifles in July 2004, it unleashed a protest the likes of which no one had witnessed before. This collection of essays brings to mind this troubling image, sometimes directly at others, obliquely. The contributors write with candor and passion on ideas of the nation, identity and what makes the people of the Northeast so alienated from the mainland. All the articles are intensely personal responses to what is happening in the Northeast, to the changes, the growing asymmetries and fault lines that are causing enormous rifts in the region. Many of the contributors are writers, academics and activists from the northeast, others, like the editor are 'outsiders' but all share a passion for the region and an intense desire to see change, to see peace.
