Numerous Errors Within
By N H Tanner
This book is a nicely-written, pleasant read, but some of the errors in it diminish its shining stars. Aside from the factual errors previously cited by others, there are more disturbing typos and errors; I will cite two--just for the sake of brevity--that should have been easily picked up in proofing/editing but weren't: There is a gray panel in the World Trade Center section whose headline reads September 11, 2011, though the text cites the correct date of "9/11" as we know it around here to be 2001; the other is in the Central Park section, where it describes a bust of Mayor Mitchel and gives his name as James Purroy Mitchel, when in fact his name was JOHN Purroy Mitchel. As good as this book is, those particular errors could well have been avoided--particularly the September 11th year-typo. I think there should have been an errata sheet included with these books, and I have informed those whom I've given them as gifts that there are errors. I've seen numerous volumes of this type either recalled or relegated to clearance bins for a lot less in the way of errors they contained. Maybe there should be a revised edition...

Errored, which isn't good for a book of facts.
By Amazon Customer
Received for Xmas, has serious errors: pp 7 "In the 1890s material from the excavations of the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel ... and the Lexington Ave Subway was used as landfill to enlarge Governors Island ..."

The Brooklyn Battery tunnel was opened in 1950. The East Side IRT, which runs under Lexington north of Grand Central, started construction in 1900 and opened in 1904 and the portion under Lexington Ave opened in 1918.

Later on the same page: "The bronze propeller on the monument was cast from one of the wooden propellers on Wright's Flyer" You can't cast a bronze propeller from wood. You could cast it in the fashion of the wooden one, or after the wooden one, but not from it.
