I love this book

Wow, I love this book! He's an incredible writer that is able to just pull you in with his words. I've recommended it to several people, but my 11 year old son was a little too scared by the first few chapters so he put it down. Hopefully I can get him to read it when he's 13 or so.

The headline here is the first line of the book. I've heard others describe it this way, but how can you not read a book that starts off with a line like that? Especially if you're gifted with living in the Northwest United States as I am. You can relate to poor Harvey.
I was actually very pleasantly surprised by this book. It was very well paced and I found myself looking forward to the next opportunity to pick it up, or sneaking a few pages at my desk. It was a bit darker then I expected, though not overly so.
The book follows young Harvey Swick who is bored with the gloomy weather and nothing to do. But then a mysterious smiling man gives him the opportunity to go to a place where he can do anything he likes and have fun all day long. At first he gives into the requests to refrain from asking too many questions, but his inquisitive nature gets him questioning exactly where he is and what the mysterious Mr Hood gets from the presence of him and the other children.
I read this book shortly after reading Coraline, another "scary" book written more specifically for a younger crowd. If you enjoyed Coraline, I would recommend you pick up this book immediately. The two are very comparable and you should be able to enjoy them both. But whereas Coraline recognizes her the threat more quickly, Harvey's full realization takes time as he goes back and forth. If you enjoy a mystery as well, the period of the book where Harvey is intently trying to understand what is going on is very engrossing.
Definitely recommend, especially as something you can get through fairly quickly and still enjoy the trip.

Don't Wish Your Life Away!

This was a wonderful story about a boy who wishes his life away, as we all tend to do at times. When he despairs that spring will never come one cold February afternoon, a creepy fellow named Rictus comes and invites him to stay at the Holiday House, a wonderful place hidden behind a wall of mist where your every wish is made true, and time flies by so quick that it is spring in the morning, summer at noon, fall in the evening and wintertime at night. I read this novel in two sittings and did not lose interest in it once. It is a young adult novel, but it is actually suitable for readers of all ages. Barker never talks down to his younger readers, and there are some very chilling parts in this book, some of them every bit as scary as "adult" horror novels. His strengths as a writer are on full display here as well, with vivid imagery and plenty of clever wordplay. High recommended.
