Dr. Orlick is a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Human Kinetics, University of Ottawa, Canada, where he teaches and conducts research on performance excellence and quality living. He has degrees from Syracuse University, the College of William and Mary, and the University of Alberta and is founder and editor of the innovative free on-line Journal of Excellence. Create A Positive Life For Your Children (And For Yourself)!

I first became aware of Dr. Orlick's work when reading about a group of kids with deployed parents who learned 'Spaghetti Toes' as an effective method of relaxation. While 'Positive Living Skills' includes relaxation exercises, it encompasses SO much more than that. Written for adults to help children of all ages (and also adults), it teaches the skills necessary to create a happy and positive attitude starting at any age, by paying attention to and increasing the positive influences in our lives.

One of my favorite sections in the book teaches children how to Focus. It lists eight pillars of Focus: listening; seeing; learning; playing and performing; reading; feeling; love and joy; and reflection. While all of these are important, Focused FEELING jumped out as a critical step in childhood development. It teaches children to pay attention to, and identify, their feelings. So often kids can't figure out what they're feeling, and so they don't know how to react. It also teaches them to pay attention to how others feel, which shows them that their actions impact the outside world and not just themselves.

One chapter does focus exclusively on relaxation, which helps children learn to deal with daily stress in their lives. Through several fun and engaging activities the book teaches relaxation skills that can be used by children AND adults. Dr. Orlick has also developed a series of CDs (sold separately) that can be used to teach one child ... or groups of children ... how to relax.

This book can be a life-changer for children of all ages as they learn to create and maintain a positive outlook on life each and every day.

Here's to embracing our potential!

I have stuck right into Positive Living Skills! Jam packed with practical exercises! So easy and engaging to read ... love all the subheadings. Can really sense Terry's mission throughout. It really ought to be in every teacher's, parent's, grandparent's, coach's, kid's hands, as well as anyone else in a position to influence a child's life.

Some of us adults have a lot of undoing to do ... rivers of tears to shed - to free up more space for `zenergy'! But practicing all the positive skills enable us to embark and thrive on the journey with greater courage and capacity ... allowing us to embrace the challenges and flow in positive directions.

I was always a bit perplexed by the title "Embracing your potential" ... got the "potential" bit, but am only now getting "embracing" ... as am increasingly and painfully aware of how I have resisted my own potential; despite helping many others to break through their resistance. The ground is littered with so many missed opportunities for so many [referring to the falling leaf story, p. 14-16] ... I have squandered plenty myself. But by focusing on remaining open and positive as Terry suggests, blissfully and blessedly the opportunities keep coming ...

Here's a great opportunity to apply the tools to BE and DO better!

In a very clear and concise manner, Orlick provides his readers with the tools, insight, and activities to create this change. Teachers, parents, children, families, classrooms, teams, and anyone wanting to live a more positive life will benefit from this book and the content within these pages. This book is insightful, heart warming, and action orientated. The reader will be inspired to act in more positive ways by realizing how our feelings, choices, and actions impact our lives and the lives of others. We leave an imprint on the world through our choices and actions. These pages remind the reader of our responsibility to be positive "Builders of Eternity" and to use the "Bag of tools" provided within these pages to be better, live better, connect better, and build a better world. As noted by Orlick, we can CHOOSE and ACT for a better world and live to our true human potential. Furthermore, we have the capacity to start building a better world through one positive skill, one positive activity, one positive choice and one positive action at a time.
