The Story of Robert College in Istanbul, Shaped by the Preoccupations of the Time

First published in 1909, FIFTY YEARS IN CONSTANTINOPLE outlines the origins and development of Robert College, a Christian school located in the heart of Istanbul, now known as Bogazici (Bosphorus) University. The brainchild of Mr. Robert, an American philanthropist with a desire for universal good, the college experienced turbulent times at a time of considerable political and social unrest in the last days of the Ottoman Empire. Washburn's account captures the drama of that time, which penetrated day-to-day life in the college, with members of different nationalities openly battling with one another. The book is a product of its time: capital punishment was accepted as a way of life; the orientalist perspective on the Ottoman Empire was commonplace; while Washburn remains convinced that everyone - Muslims included - could be encouraged to embrace the Christian way of life. Towards the end the book becomes a little repetitive, but it remains a valuable account of Istanbul in the mid-nineteenth century.
