Yoga: The Science of the Soul, by Osho

Much of what is known as yoga today emphasizes physical postures and exercises to increase flexibility and help relaxation. But in fact, yoga has its roots in centuries of rigorous investigation and research in the East to develop an understanding of human consciousness and its potential.

In Yoga, Osho explains the meaning of some of the most important Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an early "scientist of the soul" who is credited with being the father of Raja Yoga, or the "royal path" of yoga that uses physical postures and breath primarily as a means to achieve higher states of consciousness. With a fresh translation of these ancient texts, and unique Osho insights into the modern mind and its psychology, Patanjali comes to life on the pages with an approach to using yoga for greater self-understanding that is absolutely relevant to our times.

An invaluable resource for beginning or experienced yoga practitioners, and for anyone who seeks to better understand the intricate and powerful relationship that exists between body and mind

different way of thinking about life
By Roberta
I bought this book after reading it from the library. It's a completely new way of thinking about life for me. I had never heard of Osho. There's a lot to think about what he is saying, and I'm still processing it, so I'm not sure what else to say here, but I have really enjoyed reading this book, twice.

The Essence of the Teachings of Yoga
By S. Berkley
There is no other book which conveys the true essence of Yoga as does this book. It would be helpful for anyone truly interested to begin collecting the 10 volume set originally published as "Yoga, the Alpha and the Omega," as well. This series IS the Alpha and the Omega on Yoga.

I am not an Osho devotee, yet regardless of anyone's views on his controversial life, his teachigs remain unparalleled. If you want to talk on a scholarly basis, sure you can read Eliade's "Yoga, Immortality and Freedom." That has an excellent history of the path. If you are interested in authentic practice of Asana and the like, anything produced by the KYM (Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram) will be invaluable- I especially reccomend "The Yoga of the Yogi," Krishnamacharya's (2nd) biography. And of course, the classical texts are always of Great use- The pradipika, gheranda samhita, all the countless others...

However, if you really want to extract the teachings, buy this book. Read it, meditate on it, let it sink deep down into your root and your envelop your being. This is it. These volumes by Osho are all you need. This book will change you, if you are ready for it.

And that is what Yoga is about- a transmutation: completely breaking you apart, burning your Klesas, and revealing your essence in its complete freedom- freedom from tension. The natural, innate state of Sahaja, pure spontaneity.

Remember, anytime tension arises, it begins in you. Instead of projecting it out, look within.

Proof: A Play, by David Auburn

Proof is the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

One of the most acclaimed plays of the 1999-2000 season, Proof is a work that explores the unknowability of love as much as it does the mysteries of science.

It focuses on Catherine, a young woman who has spent years caring for her father, Robert, a brilliant mathematician in his youth who was later unable to function without her help. His death has brought into her midst both her sister, Claire, who wants to take Catherine back to New York with her, and Hal, a former student of Catherine's father who hopes to find some hint of Robert's genius among his incoherent scribblings. The passion that Hal feels for math both moves and angers Catherine, who, in her exhaustion, is torn between missing her father and resenting the great sacrifices she made for him. For Catherine has inherited at least a part of her father's brilliance -- and perhaps some of his instability as well. As she and Hal become attracted to each other, they push at the edges of each other's knowledge, considering not only the unpredictability of genius but also the human instinct toward love and trust.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Twenty-five-year-old Catherine, who sacrificed college to care for her mentally ill father (once a brilliant, much-admired mathematician), is left in a kind of limbo after his death. Socially awkward and a bit of a shut-in, she is gruff with Hal, a former student who shows up even before the funeral wanting to root through the countless notebooks her father kept in the years of his decline, hoping to find mathematical gold. On the heels of his arrival comes Claire, Catherine's cosmopolitan, blandly successful, and pushy sister, with plans to sell their father's house and take Catherine (whom she's convinced has inherited a touch of their father's illness) with her back to New York. Catherine does not want to leave, and things become more complicated as she and Hal tentatively begin to develop a relationship. She gives him the key to a drawer in her father's desk, where the "gold" waits-in the form of a notebook filled with the most original and astonishing mathematical proof Hal has seen in years. Thrilled, he wants to take immediate steps to have the proof published in her father's name, until Catherine shocks both him and Claire by declaring that she is its author. Hal's harsh incredulity pushes Catherine into an indifferent funk, sorely disappointed by the insult of having to prove her honesty to a friend she had trusted. There is much to appeal to YAs in this Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play, which crackles with subtle wit while tackling large questions.

From Library Journal
After the death of her mathematical genius father, Catherine, who gave up her own study of mathematics to tend to him, claims that she is the author of a mathematical proof found in the attic among his unpublished, mostly incoherent notebooks by Hal, one of his former students. But what "proof" does Catherine have that she, and not her father, is the author? Her older sister, home to attend the funeral, doubts her claim and, in fact, doubts Catherine's own sanity. Hal, who has professional ambitions of his own, isn't exactly disinterested and may not be trustworthy; his sleeping with Catherine has also complicated the issue. The elusiveness of genius in general and the difficulty of a mathematical proof in particular here become metaphors for the uncertainties of love, trust, and personal integrity. This wonderful play has already won the Kesselring Prize for Auburn, also a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Proof's deft dialog, its careful structure, and the humanity of the central characters are themselves proof of a major new talent in the American theater. Strongly recommended for all drama collections. Robert W. Melton, Univ. of Kansas Libs., Lawrence

From Booklist
At the beginning of this affecting play, Robert, a mathematician, startles his mathematician daughter, Catherine, but apologizes with a bottle of champagne for her birthday. As they celebrate, he berates her recent laziness and urges her to resume work, for she isn't, as she has feared, too old at 25 to produce a great proof. When his former student Hal appears, Robert vanishes. In fact, this is the night of the day of Robert's funeral, and Hal has come to pore over Robert's papers for anything of value amid the reams of nonsense scrawled during 20 years of mental breakdown. Eventually, something valuable is found. But is it Robert's work, or, as she insists, Catherine's? With Catherine's sister, Claire, ready to put her into treatment for having collapsed just as Robert did, and with Hal torn between being smitten with Catherine and distrusting her claim of authorship, the proof becomes the point around which intellectual fascination and emotional needs accrete and compound. A moving complement to Tina Howe's father-daughter play, Painting Churches. Ray Olson

Takes Me Back to the Walter Kerr Theater
By Timothy Haugh
In the past few years there has been a resurgence of plays with themes centered around math and science and characters who are mathematicians and scientists. Thank heaven! Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" is magnificent. Then there are two plays produced by the Manhattan Theater Club: "An Experiment with an Air Pump" by Shelagh Stephenson and this play, "Proof" by David Auburn. I think both are wonderful.
After winning the Pulitzer, a shot at a Tony, and a continuing run on Broadway, Auburn really has no need for my good words; however, let me give a few anyway. This is a cleverly written piece. Unlike "Copenhagen," this play really isn't about mathematicians and scientists. It is just framed around them. No math skills are necessary to enjoy this play. Instead, it is an examination of love, trust, madness and genius presented through the lives of mathematicians.
In fact, the only weakness in this play is when real mathematics comes up. I cringed when I heard the famous exchange between mathematicians G.H. Hardy and Srinivasa Ramanujan put in the mouth of Robert and Catherine, the father/daughter mathematicians at the heart of this play. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Fortunately, this is the only time math actually comes up. Instead, this play takes us into the lives of four very interesting people. I was fortunate enough to see a performance of this play on its second night on Broadway. I was incredibly moved. Mary-Louise Parker's performance as Catherine was particularly impressive. Reading the script, I was carried right back to the theater and could relive the experience again. I loved it.

A CHALLENGING, ENTERTAINING PLAY
By A Customer
Not since David Hirson's brilliant La Bete and Wrong Mountain has Broadway seen a more exciting play than Proof! I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates theatre that is as challenging as it is entertaining. I sent many friends to see the original production, and none was disappointed.

Brilliant, and yet...
By Ambergold
Proof, by David Auburn, is a compelling and tautly beautiful play, ringing with a quiet elegance. Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play, I was introduced to it through the 2005 movie, which now having read the play I realize was an extremely good adaptation, as well as a very good film in its own right. It's the story of Catherine, a brilliant but somewhat neurotic mathematics student who has lived all her life in the shadow of her famous father, a groundbreaking mathematician revered the world over. The play begins with a dialogue between Catherine and her father, in which he berates her for wasting her potential, while gradually, during the course of it, we discover that her father is insane, and has been for quite some time. He is living in semi-seclusion while Catherine looks after him. Then, as the conversation goes on, we - and Catherine - realize that her father is dead; as he calmly informs her "Heart failure. Quick. The funeral's tomorrow." From there, we are slowly sucked into a drama of at once deep intensity and lyrical lightness. Abruptly deprived of the man who, for better or worse, was the center of her existence for all her life, Catherine finds herself having to cope with life and relationships beyond her father, as Harold, a graduate student of her father's, begins going through all her father's journals to see if by some chance he wrote anything significant during his recent years of insanity. Catherine, immediately defensive and certain that her father wrote nothing but graphomaniac scribbles during the last few years, throws him out of the house. Claire is the fourth person in this coterie, Catherine's domineering, overly-careful sister, who ran out on both her father and Catherine years ago(although supporting them financially) and is now determined to drag her "troubled" little sister back with her to New York and fix her up. As half the story is told in flashbacks to scenes betweens Catherine and her father when he was still alive, these make up the four main characters.

Three of the four main characters are mathematicians, and while there is little or no actual math in the play it is still a mathematicians dream(in much the same way Possession is a poet's/writer's dream). One of the many funny moments of the play consists of Hal's band playing a song composed entirely of silence, based on the imaginary number "I", a mathematician's joke.

Proof is a tale of many things; isolation, loneliness, love, hate, the clashing of wildly different characters from different worlds(Harold, more often called Hal, belongs to a band, and Catherin's sister doesn't understand math), and the love-hate relationships engendered within families. But mostly, it is about the quest for genius to find security and definition in a world untailored for fragile people, and to set free the impulse that drives that genius. Proof has an oddly breathless feel at times; as if both Catherine and her burgeoning talent hang in the balance between existence and destruction. In an blending of poetry, prose, and math, we discover her fate, of which the following passage(one of several turning points in the play) is a perfect example -
"Let X equal the cold. It is cold in December. The months of cold equal November through February. There are four months of cold and four of heat, leaving four months of indeterminate temperature. ...Let X equal the month of full bookstores. The number of books approaches infinity as the number of months of cold approaches four. I will be as cold now as I will in the future. The future of cold is infinite. The future of cold is the future of heat..."

Still, while Proof is a remarkable and luminous work, somehow it lacks something - the immensity of vision that I would expect from a Pulitzer-Prize-winning play. It is essentially about individuals, not ideas, and while to some extent this is true of all great literature, still Proof feels small, constrained within its own eclectic world. And there is no great tragedy, love story, or revelation about human nature to make up for this, to dominate it and lift it into a book that says something, a book that will join the pantheon of great literature. It has depth but not width. It's graceful and beautiful, clever and often funny - certainly memorable - but it is not an important work.

I don't understand how anyone can charge $3.00 for a 56 page book!!!!! Honestly, it should be illegal. I've neglected to check page numbers in the past, and NOTHING aggravates me more than paying money for a single chapter!

!!Warning!! Contents Extremely Hot!
By Karl
OH MY DAYS!! Is it me? Or did it just get hot in here? Laura Bishop had fallen for the Greek sex God Chase Adams, when they knew each other back in school, but when they both leave for college they lose contact. Laura hears, through the grapevine, that Chase has married a woman from a good family and has settled down. Eleven years pass but Laura has not forgotten about her high school crush. When they finally see each other for the first time in years, sparks begin to fly, or should I say Fireworks! This incredibly steamy book that boasts a three way chemistry, will leave you hot under the collar and could probably make a porn star blush! This was seriously wild! I could feel the animal passion as the heat got turned way up. I'm off to read the second book!

A Little Bit of Cinderella, a Lot of Spice
By Sherrie
In high school, Laura Bishop's dream guy was the class golden-boy, Chase Adams. To her disappointment, they were nothing more than friends. Fast forward a few years, and Laura's life story has hit a few bumps.in the road, leaving her to earn extra money in ways she might not have imagined in high school.

Purely by chance, she meets Chase again. Sparks ignite, and lots of steamy action ensues, and not just with Chase. He's rich, hot and successful, and she's faced with a temptation she didn't anticipate.

This reads like a stand-a-lone story, but seems to leave open the possibility of a continuation. On the spice-o-meter, this ranks fairly high, probably not for those whose tastes are purely traditional. Translation - it's quite explicit!

Build simple scrapers or vast armies of Java-based bots to untangle and capture the Web

Overview

  • Learn something new in an Instant! A short, fast, focused guide delivering immediate results
  • Get your Java environment set up and running
  • Gather clean, formatted web data into your own database
  • Learn how to work around crawler-resistant websites and legally subvert security measures
  • Use built-in Java features to perform parallel processing and distributed scraping
  • Build test cases for your own websites using JUnit

In Detail

Java is often thought of as a stuffy enterprise language, while web scraping is the often-murky domain of scripting languages. By combining the robustness and extensibility of Java with the flexibility and power of web scraping, we can create immensely useful tools that can solve very difficult problems.

Instant Web Scraping with Java will guide you, step by step, through setting up your Java environment. You will also learn how to write simple web scrapers and distributed networks of crawlers. Throughout the book, we will provide useful tips, out-of-the-box working code, and additional resources to build expert knowledge.

Instant Web Scraping with Java will teach how to build your own web scrapers using real-world scraping examples that collect and store data from Wikipedia, public records data sites, IP address geolocation services, and more. You will learn how to run scrapers across multiple servers, run them in parallel, and subvert common methods of anti-scraper security used on modern websites. This book will also provide you with detailed step-by-step instructions, out-of-the-box working code, and expert pointers to further resources on key topics.

Instant Web Scraping with Java will show you how to view and collect any Internet data at the speed of your processor!

What you will learn from this book

  • Set up your Java environment and work with the Eclipse IDE
  • Execute complicated web crawlers that run without intervention
  • Handle errors, documentation, and writing robust code
  • Log scraped data for later retrieval and analysis
  • Write code to test website content and functionality with the JUnit framework
  • Learn techniques for getting around website security, designed to prevent automated scraping
  • Fill and submit forms automatically
  • Use threading to run scrapers in parallel
  • Use Java’s Remote Machine Invocation to create multi-server distributed scrapers

Approach

Filled with practical, step-by-step instructions and clear explanations for the most important and useful tasks. This book is full of short, concise recipes to learn a variety of useful web scraping techniques using Java. You will start with a simple basic recipe of setting up your Java environment and gradually learn some more advanced recipes such as using complex Scrapers.

Who this book is written for

Instant Web Scraping with Java is aimed at developers who, while not necessarily familiar with Java, are at least ready to dive into the complexities of this language with simple, step-by-step instructions leading the way. It is assumed that you have at least an intermediate knowledge of HTML, some knowledge of MySQL, and access to an Internet-connected computer while doing most of the exercises (after all, scraping the Web is difficult if your code can’t get online!)

I recommend this book for programmers wanting to build web tools using Java
By Robert Scavilla
I don't often leave reviews for technical books (I've been reading them for 35 years:). I also am cautious about buying technical books more than a year old. That said, I felt the author did a really good job here and I recommend this book for programmers wanting to build web tools using Java. The ideal reader would have a strong understanding of code and OOP, but not necessarily Java. The book doesn't cover all the details but gives you plenty to start with and the author is very good about providing links to additional resources. For me, the examples in the beginning of the book all worked well. Some of the examples deeper in worked with minor fixes.

The book covered Jsoup well enough for me to make use of it and it was easy for me to expand to advanced uses using online resources. HTMLUnit was introduced and a good example for working with forms was provided. Again I was easily able to expand on what the book covered using online resources.

My hat is off to the author for tackling distributed computing in the last chapter. Well done. This is the best introduction to RMI that I've come across.

By anonymousReviewer
I got this book to supplement the "Web Scraping with Python" book by the same author. I have much more experience in Java than Python and was hoping to stick with what i know. That being said, there are a couple issues i have come across in this book. The first and most problematic is that Ive struggled to get the example code to run. With the help of some online videos Ive gotten things moving, but now there is the task of matching up what the author has done with the outside tutorial and figuring out how to combine them to continue the rest of the book. The other issue i have found with the book is that this book tries to be too many things to the reader. In the introduction the author makes some statements about how this isn't a book on learning Java; yet there is a section on how two write your first Java program. Additionally, there are sections through out the book describing what code comments are, how to write a class, and other somewhat fundamental Java instructions. I wish the book focused more on the task at hand, web scraping, and less on how to write in Java.

By Amazon Customer
This book does a poor job of explaining the concepts on scrapping html. The book gives a few working programs that can be reused if you have a good understanding Java to start with.

The best reference book of the bizarre you'll find
By Jon Konrath
This book is epic. We're talking about 500+ pages, dictionary-style, of bizarre, abnormal, eccentric individuals from the ages. The author includes for categories for consideration: contrarians, theorists, visionaries, and entertainers. All of my favorites are here: visionaries with horrible personal quirks, like Tesla and his pigeons, or Howard Hughes and his jars of pee and hotel room bunkers; writers like Burroughs and artists like Warhol; the guy that built the coral castle down in Florida; and Hiroo Onoda, the Japanese soldier who was still operating command-style until 1974, unaware that WW2 had ended.

But what makes this book such a joy is that I could flip open to any random page and find someone I didn't even know existed, people who were janitors by day but wrote 11,000-page novels at night, only discovered after their death; people building castles and starting cults and living on a dollar a year even though they were millionaires and digging out massive underground gardens in Fresno that looked like Italian catacombs. As a kid, I practically memorized the Guinness book of world records, so I absolutely eat this stuff up.

This book is the ultimate bathroom reader, something to open to a random page for a quick entry or two, but it's also hugely entertaining to read from A to Z. Keep a copy of wikipedia handy and wander down the k-hole when you find a good entry, but be warned that this could make the book take a month to finish. Highly recommended.

A Treasure Chest!
By close reader
This is an amazing collection of architectural drawings--from the most meticulously detailed perspectives to abstract notions for structures, and in just about every imaginable medium. The variety is incredible and should appeal to anyone with any sort of interest in graphic arts, whether or not you are passionate about architecture per se. It's a book of wonderful art works. Some of the ideas were realized as actual structures, and some not. Besides being moved by the art works, it's fascinating to read the descriptions and learn the intentions behind each architect's plan. I recommend it without reservation.

Good, but......
By William Warren
I have enjoyed the book. It contains drawings of buildings and structures I would never have known about otherwise. Many of these drawings have considerable artistic merit. My only mild complaint is that the book whet my appetite, regarding a number of the drawings, for a lot more information about the architect/artist and the structures depicted (and more information about why many of them were never built). In other words, I wish there had been additional text and greater detail.

Jimi Hendrix: Musician presents a completely fresh look at Hendrix by tracing his musical history and examining him as a guitarist, composer, and singer. Hendrix was a larger-than-life figure, and previous accounts have tended to obscure the role of his musical genius. This book places the visionary musician within the historical context of the 1960s and the years before and after his rise to fame, and within the musical and cultural events during all stages of his career, providing fascinating new clues about how he created his musical masterpieces. Hendrix expert Douglas J. Noble contributes a special examination of the instruments and equipment Hendrix used in his quest for more expressive and exciting sounds. 300 color and black-and-white photographs make this a visual celebration of the genius who created modern rock guitar.

Jimi Hendrix - The Musician Side of Hendrix
By Arnon Ehud
I want to join all 5 star previous reviews because this book worth it. It covers Hendrix life from the music point of view - the influences and his musical endevour.
one remark though - print is too small and even with my reading glasses I had some difficulty.

An Excellent Review of One Who Dared to Kiss the Sky
By o dubhthaigh
This coffee table sized tome would make a perfect gift for anyone with an avocation for all things Hendrix. This is a well researched and documented account of the career and personal history of Jimi Hendrix. Shadwick has done a terrific job casting the historical setting that made both his music nad himself possible. While not the musicologist's tome that Lewis Porter did on John Coltrane, the research and writing here is absolutely first rate.
Shadwick clearly sets an historical line that preceeded Hendrix as musician and showman both in the course of R and B and Blues and Jazz (louis Jordan, T Bone Walker, the Isleys, etc) as well as that mix of Cherokee and African family heritage and culture that made him so unique. I'm not clear whether or not this has the official approval of the Hendrix Estate, but it should. It is a compassionate, yet unblinking study of his intrepid courage, his core humble hamnity, and the havoc wrought by the struggles and the success in a world of rock going crazy. In so many ways the "cult of personality" was born around and out of the fascination and adoration of Jimi Hendrix, first and foremost as a musician, and as just this wild hippie, which image became the whale that swallowed the Jonah of new music. At a time when he most needed to retreat from being "Jimi Hendrix" an entire network had contrived to ensnare him The dismay expressed by Mitchell, Redding and Cox is squarely legitimate and indicts for all time those whose msiion it was to consume him.
It clearly jumps out at you who was loyal to Hendrix as a human being, who sycophantically fed off him like a pernicious cancer, destroying a brilliant and yet essentially very kind man. It will aways be one of the great unanswered questions as to where he might have gone with his music. In the case of Coltrane, John had come to contemplate the face of God and may not have been able to articulate any further the rapture he experienced, and thus he may not have died so much as ascended into heaven.
In the case of Hendrix, he had inadvertently grasped onto death's doorhandle and while looking for a way to rise like a Phoenix from what he had clearly perceived as an exhausted road, he did not so much select his end as be virtually tossed from the window while scanning the horizon for a new rising sun.
The book is loaded with great photos and an index, set of references and a discography that is definitively well documented. The interviews recounted with friends, family, loved ones and villains is even handed and objective. This is a terrific book, definitely the best there is about a man whose music impacted and changed forever the way dedicated artists considered their craft. And no one has played the guitar the same way since Jimi Hendrix. He changed everything.

Getting Inside Jimi's Musical Mind
By Mad Dog
So much has been written about Jimi Hendrix, do we really need another full length book? Fortunately, the answer is a resounding "yes"! Keith Shadwick has given us a fresh perspective on Hendrix, one that took this reader on a bit of a travel through time. What we've been missing all these years is a comprehensive source that cuts out all of the superfluous junk and gets down to that which was real, at that time - how it affected the music and how the music affected it.
Electric Gypsy (Harry Shapiro) is an excellent book in that it has the bulk of the factual information on Jimi's life, maybe even too much information. But, in its quest for all things encyclopedic, it seemed to miss out on the spirit of the time that Jimi lived in. Setting The Record Straight (Eddie Karmer and John McDermott) partially bridged this chasm, by taking the reader into not only the studio where Jimi and his bandmates laid down the tracks, but into Jimi's musical mind - the kinds of sounds he wanted to find, where he thought his music could go in the future. In short, it took us into some of Jimi's dreams. Between these two extremes, one can find much middle ground, most of it far more towards the Electric Gypsy camp. To get closer to the man himself and the realities of the world as it was when he was making his mark, one was almost better off searching out vintage magazines, such as Guitar World, Rolling Stone, etc.
But now we have Jimi Hendrix: Musician. The changes brought on by the simple realities of Jimi's musical life are given perspective in this book fare more completely than ever before. We are given glimpses of the journey and not just a facimile of the final destination. And those glimpses provide color so we can see more clearly how difficult it must have been to endure the musician's life back when Jimi was starving. Not only that, we can share in the joy of the good times and also the frustrations Jimi felt when all was not well during his last years.
Jimi's musical tenure was rooted right in the middle of the most incredible of times, when social change moved music and music attempted to cause social change. Many authors have struggled to put the reader into that space and time, but Keith Sedgewick has managed to sail those waters brilliantly.
