For years, people have been telling me that they appreciate the work of Education for the Future, and that it reflects what schools should be doing to improve teaching and learning for all students. However, some also ask--can you just give us a little data book that gets us started incorporating data into our work to get student achievement increases across the board?
So, here it is--a little data analysis book that contains Victoria's Data Secrets--the bare essentials for using data to improve teaching and learning. The activities described can be used with any level of educational organization--elementary, middle, high schools, districts, as well as special programs. Enjoy!
About the Author
Victoria L. Bernhardt, Ph.D., is Executive Director of the Education for the Future Initiative, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to build the capacity of all schools at all levels to gather, analyze, and use data to continuously improve learning for all students. She is also a Professor, on leave, in the Department of Professional Studies in Education, College of Communication and Education, at California State University, Chico.
Dr. Bernhardt is passionate about her mission of helping all educators continuously improve student learning in their classrooms, their schools, their districts, and states by gathering, analyzing, and using actual data--as opposed to using hunches and "gut-level" feelings. She has made numerous presentations at professional meetings and has conducted thousands of workshops on The School Portfolio, data analysis, and continuous improvement at local, state, regional, national, and international levels.

Too Derivative

This book is a compendium of ideas that the author has gleaned from other sources, most notably Robert Marzano, Fisher and Frey, Brookhart and others. The attempt to dress it up with "real life" experiences does nothing to advance the quality of the scholarship. There are many better choices to consider in this field of study
